MY NEIGHBOR CALLED THE POLICE BECAUSE MY GRASS WAS TOO TALL... THREE DAYS LATER SHE LOST THE ENTIRE STREET

Chapter 1: The Police Knock

The police showed up because my lawn was four inches too tall.

I was kneeling beside my husband's hospital bed when my phone rang.

"Mrs. Naomi Carter?"

"Yes."

"This is Officer Daniel Ortiz."

My heart skipped.

"Is my husband okay?"

There was a pause.

"Ma'am... this isn't about the hospital."

"What?"

"We're standing outside your house."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"We received a complaint."

"About what?"

Another awkward silence.

"Your grass."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"My... grass?"

"Your neighbor claims your property is violating city regulations."

I looked across the hospital room.

My husband, Samuel, was unconscious.

He'd suffered a massive stroke four days earlier.

I hadn't been home since the ambulance took him away.

Not once.

I hadn't showered.

Barely slept.

Barely eaten.

And someone had called the police over my lawn.

"I'll be there in twenty minutes."

When I arrived, I saw her immediately.

Patricia Holloway.

President of the neighborhood association.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect hair.

Perfect smile.

She waved at me.

"Oh good."

The officers looked uncomfortable.

Patricia crossed her arms.

"We have standards in this neighborhood."

I stared at her.

"My husband is in intensive care."

She shrugged.

"That's unfortunate."

The officers exchanged glances.

Patricia pointed toward my yard.

"This house lowers property values."

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I genuinely couldn't believe another human being could be this heartless.

Then Patricia smiled.

"If you can't take care of your property..."

She pointed toward a document in her hand.

"...maybe you shouldn't live here."

The entire street had gathered outside.

Watching.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody defended me.

Then Patricia leaned closer.

And whispered:

"I'm buying your house next month."

My blood ran cold.

"What?"

May you like

She smiled wider.

"You'll understand soon enough."
