Chapter 17 - The Family Meeting We Should Have Had Years Ago

Three weeks after the sale, we finally had the family meeting everyone had demanded from me for years.
This time it happened in a lawyer's conference room.
Nobody controlled the seating.
Nobody controlled the door.
Nobody got to say, "Not under my roof."
Mom sat beside her new attorney.
Tyler sat beside his.
Dad had separate counsel because of the false witness statement.
Jenna came only to discuss the children and the property she needed to retrieve.
I sat beside Grace.
Investigators were not there. This was not an interrogation. It was an attempt to settle the remaining civil issues: disputed personal property, repayment claims, and the transition out of the house.
Mom looked smaller than I remembered.
Not weak.
Just no longer framed by my kitchen, my furniture, my money, my silence.
Her attorney began.
"Marlene is prepared to vacate Willow Crest by the contractual deadline if Claire agrees not to pursue civil recovery for household expenses paid during the last four years."
I almost smiled.
"I wasn't pursuing that anyway."
Mom looked surprised.
"You're not?"
"No. I paid the mortgage because it was my mortgage. I paid utilities because I chose to. I'm not turning every bad decision I made into an invoice."
For a second, something like shame moved across her face.
Then Tyler's lawyer spoke.
"Tyler disputes responsibility for several credit-card charges."
Jenna laughed once.
Everyone looked at her.
She opened a folder.
"I brought statements. He used the card for his truck tires, a gaming computer, two hotel weekends, and the Apex Auto Spa franchise deposit. I can identify every charge."
Tyler glared at her.
"You enjoyed those hotel weekends."
Jenna stared back.
"I thought you paid for them."
He looked away.
Dad's attorney then addressed the insurance beneficiary change.
The insurer had rejected it because a required policyholder confirmation never occurred. Dad was still alive, so no proceeds had been lost.
But the attempt existed.
Mom claimed Tyler had prepared it.
Tyler claimed Mom had.
For once, neither could hide inside the word family.
Grace slid a final document across the table.
It was a mutual property list.
"Claire is releasing any claim to ordinary furniture she did not specifically purchase and wish to keep," she said. "Northline's contract controls fixtures and listed appliances. Claire will retrieve personal records, clothing, work gear, and the oak desk from her former room."
Mom's head snapped up.
"The desk stays."
I almost laughed.
"I bought it."
"It matches the room."
"The room doesn't belong to either of us anymore."
That sentence ended the argument.
After the meeting, Mom followed me into the hallway.
"Claire."
I stopped.
Her attorney remained nearby.
"I found a place," she said.
"Good."
"One-bedroom."
"Okay."
"It's small."
I waited.
She looked at me as if I had failed to read the script.
"Aren't you going to ask where?"
"If you want to tell me, you can."
Her eyes filled.
"You really changed."
I thought about that.
"No," I said. "I stopped proving I loved you by letting you hurt me."
She flinched.
Then she whispered, "I was afraid."
"Of what?"
"Of losing the house. Losing the family. Your father getting old. Tyler never getting his life together. You leaving."
"So you made sure I couldn't leave."
She wiped her cheek.
"I thought if everything stayed together, we'd be okay."
"We weren't together. We were stacked on top of me."
Mom closed her eyes.
For the first time, she did not argue.
At the end of the hallway, Tyler shouted my name.
I turned.
He was holding a court envelope.
His face had gone white.
"What did you do?"
I looked at Grace.
She looked at his lawyer.
His lawyer took the envelope, read it, and swore.
Tyler lunged toward me.
"You said this was civil!"
Two courthouse officers stepped between us.
Grace said calmly, "Claire didn't issue that."
Tyler stared at the document again.
A grand-jury summons.
The criminal case had moved forward.
And for once, there was nothing in my checking account that could make it disappear.
