PART 2
PART 2
"What are you talking about?" I asked, still holding my burning cheek.
Margaret didn't answer immediately.
She looked past me.
Toward my mother.
Then she whispered,
"You just made the biggest mistake of your life."
I frowned.
"Because I didn't let her sit beside me?"
Margaret nodded.
"You thought I was protecting myself."
A long pause.
"I was protecting her."
Before I could ask another question, my mother grabbed her purse.
"I'm leaving!" Eleanor shouted dramatically. "If my own son doesn't want me here, I won't stay another second!"
She stormed toward the entrance.
I sighed.
"Just let her go."
Margaret grabbed my wrist.
"No."
Her voice was sharp enough to stop me.
"Watch."
The moment my mother reached the lobby...
Every waiter in the ballroom stopped moving.
At exactly the same time.
Serving trays were quietly placed onto nearby tables.
Wine bottles were set down.
Conversations faded.
Without exchanging a single word, all ten waiters began walking toward my mother.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
"What are they doing?" I whispered.
My mother finally noticed them.
She stopped walking.
"What is this?" she demanded.
No one answered.
The first waiter pulled a chair behind her.
The second blocked the exit.
The third quietly locked the front doors.
One by one, the remaining waiters surrounded the entrance.
Guests began standing from their seats.
Someone screamed.
My mother tried pushing past them.
"Move!"
None of them moved.
One of the men calmly placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Mrs. Eleanor."
"You are not leaving."
Her confidence disappeared instantly.
"Who are you people?"
The man reached inside his jacket.
My heart nearly stopped.
He wasn't pulling out a notepad.
He pulled out a handgun.
The other waiters did exactly the same.
Within seconds...
The entire wedding was surrounded by armed men.
I slowly turned toward Margaret.
She wasn't surprised.
She looked...
Relieved.
"You still don't understand," she said quietly.
May you like
"They never came for the wedding."
"They came for your mother."
