Chapter 8 - Sophie Was the Primary

Rachel read the word until it stopped looking like English.
PRIMARY.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
“I’m done hearing that.”
“So am I.”
He grabbed his keys.
“Where are you going?”
“To my mother’s.”
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“The woman who hit Sophie?”
“The woman who apparently got into the car that just delivered this.”
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“Try stopping me.”
They took both children.
Rachel refused to leave Sophie anywhere. Daniel refused to leave Lily.
Margaret lived fifteen minutes away.
Her front door was open.
Daniel entered first.
“Mom?”
No answer.
The living room had been torn apart.
Drawers open. Cushions cut. Papers everywhere.
Sophie grabbed Rachel’s hand.
“Is Grandma okay?”
Rachel did not know how to answer.
Daniel found Margaret in the kitchen.
She sat on the floor beside the refrigerator.
Blood ran from a cut on her forehead.
Lily screamed, “Grandma!”
Margaret opened her eyes.
“Daniel?”
He crouched beside her.
“Who did this?”
Margaret looked at Rachel.
Then Sophie.
“They came for the rabbit.”
Rachel’s skin prickled.
“Who?”
Margaret shook her head.
“You need to leave.”
“Not until you explain why you knew something was inside Bunny.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Claire gave it to me.”
Rachel stared.
“No. I bought it.”
“No, you bought a rabbit that looked exactly like it.”
Margaret’s voice trembled.
“Claire switched them.”
Daniel went still.
“When?”
“Years ago.”
Rachel felt the room tilt.
“You’re saying Claire was near Sophie?”
Margaret looked at her.
“She was the one taking those photographs.”
Rachel’s heart pounded.
“Why?”
“Because Sophie was the only person she thought no one would search.”
Daniel frowned.
“What did she put in the rabbit?”
Margaret laughed weakly.
“You still don’t understand.”
She looked directly at Rachel.
“The drive isn’t the evidence.”
“Then what is?”
Margaret’s eyes moved toward Sophie.
“Sophie is.”
Nobody spoke.
Rachel pulled her daughter closer.
“What the hell does that mean?”
Margaret opened her mouth.
A shot exploded through the kitchen window.
Glass burst across the floor.
Daniel threw himself over Lily.
Rachel dragged Sophie behind the island.
Margaret slumped against the refrigerator.
Blood spread across her blouse.
And whatever answer she had been about to give them disappeared with it.
