Chapter 10 - Two Babies, One Birthday

Rachel could not breathe.
She held both hospital tags beneath the neighbor’s porch light.
MORGAN.
HALE.
Same date.
Same hospital.
Daniel stared at them.
“What is that?”
“You tell me.”
“I’ve never seen them.”
Margaret made a sound from the grass.
Rachel crouched beside her.
“What happened at St. Vincent’s?”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“Not here.”
“Tell me.”
“I promised Claire.”
“She’s gone.”
Margaret looked at Sophie.
“No.”
Rachel froze.
“What?”
Margaret’s eyes closed.
An ambulance rounded the corner before she could say more.
The next hour became noise.
Paramedics. Questions. Police tape. Margaret taken to surgery.
Officer Dunn arrived at the hospital.
Daniel blocked him in the corridor.
“You don’t come near my family.”
Dunn looked exhausted.
“I’m trying to keep them alive.”
Rachel stepped forward.
“You helped Claire disappear.”
Dunn’s expression shifted.
“Who told you that?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
“Answer.”
Dunn looked around.
Then lowered his voice.
“I did help Claire disappear.”
Daniel moved toward him.
Dunn raised a hand.
“She asked me to.”
Rachel’s heart hammered.
“Why?”
“Because Victor Lang wanted her dead.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“Everybody’s favorite answer.”
Dunn stared at Bunny beneath Rachel’s arm.
“She contacted me once after she vanished. Said she’d hidden something where Lang would never look.”
“Sophie.”
Dunn’s face changed.
“What did you say?”
Rachel showed him the two hospital tags.
Dunn went completely still.
Then he stepped backward.
“Oh, God.”
“What?”
He looked at Daniel.
“You really don’t know?”
Daniel grabbed his coat.
“Know what?”
Dunn looked at Rachel.
“Claire didn’t choose Sophie because she was random.”
Rachel felt cold.
“Then why?”
Dunn swallowed.
“Because Sophie was supposed to be Claire’s daughter.”
