PART 3 The Signature That Wasn't Mine

For several seconds...

I couldn't breathe.

I stared at the document lying on the table.

My name.

My address.

My personal information.

Everything looked real.

Except one thing.

The signature.

It wasn't mine.

I slowly lifted my eyes toward Igor.

"What is this?"

He didn't answer.

That silence told me more than words ever could.

"Igor."

My voice became colder.

"What is this?"

He swallowed.

"Vera, listen to me..."

"No."

I pushed the document back toward him.

"First, you hide a debt from me."

"Then I find out the money went to your sister."

"And now there is a loan in my name that I never signed?"

Tamara immediately interrupted.

"Don't make this bigger than it is."

I turned toward her.

"Bigger?"

"You came into my home demanding that I pay for your son's mistakes."

"Now I find out someone used my name to borrow money."

"And you think that's small?"

For the first time, Tamara didn't have an answer.

Igor sat down slowly.

His shoulders dropped.

"I was going to fix it."

I looked at him.

"How?"

He rubbed his face.

"I thought I could make enough money to cover everything."

"You thought?"

My voice cracked.

"You risked our home."

"Our future."

"Our marriage."

"Because you thought?"

Igor closed his eyes.

"I made a mistake."

"No."

I shook my head.

"A mistake is forgetting an anniversary."

"A mistake is making a bad investment."

"What you did was a choice."

The room became painfully quiet.

Then Tamara spoke softly.

"Vera, you don't understand what happened."

I looked at her.

"Then explain."

She hesitated.

And for the first time...

She looked uncomfortable.

"Larisa was desperate."

"Her business failed."

"She had employees."

"Families depending on her."

"So Igor helped."

I stared at her.

"By stealing my identity?"

"No one stole anything."

Tamara said it too quickly.

Too confidently.

That was when I understood.

She knew.

She had known from the beginning.

I looked at Igor.

"Did your mother know about this?"

His silence was enough.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of the money.

Money could be earned.

Homes could be rebuilt.

But trust...

Once destroyed...

Was something else.

I stood up.

"I'm leaving."

Igor immediately grabbed my hand.

"Vera, please."

I pulled away.

"No."

His eyes filled with panic.

"Please don't do this."

I looked at him.

"You did this."

"Not me."

Then I walked toward the door.

But before I reached it...

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Normally, I wouldn't answer.

But something made me stop.

"Hello?"

A man's voice came through.

"Is this Vera Ivanova?"

"Yes."

"My name is Daniel Orlov. I'm an investigator."

My heart tightened.

"Investigator?"

"Yes."

"I believe you need to know something about the loan agreement currently attached to your name."

I looked back at Igor.

He had gone completely pale.

"What about it?"

The man paused.

Then said:

"Mrs. Ivanova..."

"That document wasn't created yesterday."

"It was prepared almost a year ago."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"A year?"

"Yes."

"And there is something else."

"What?"

His voice lowered.

"The person who submitted the paperwork wasn't your husband."

I looked at Igor.

Then at Tamara.

"Who was it?"

A long pause.

Then the answer came.

"The application was submitted by a woman."

My stomach dropped.

"Who?"

The investigator said one name.

And the entire world seemed to stop.

"Tamara Petrova."

I slowly lowered the phone.

My mother-in-law's face lost all color.

Igor whispered:

"Mom..."

But she said nothing.

Because for the first time...

She knew there was no excuse left.

I looked at the woman who had walked into my home demanding I pay for her son's debt.

The woman who spoke about family.

The woman who claimed everyone had to sacrifice for each other.

And I finally understood.

This was never about helping Igor.

This was about using me.

Tamara stood up.

"Vera, you don't understand."

I looked at her calmly.

"No."

"I understand perfectly."

"You didn't come here because your son needed help."

"You came here because you thought I would be easier to control."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Then the investigator's voice came through my phone one more time.

"Mrs. Ivanova..."

"There is one more thing you need to know."

I held the phone closer.

"What?"

"Your husband wasn't the only person involved."

A cold feeling moved through my body.

"Who else?"

The investigator answered:

"The bank records show money from that loan was transferred..."

"...into an account belonging to your mother-in-law."

I looked at Tamara.

May you like

And this time...

She looked afraid.
