PART 2 The Paper That Changed Everything

Vera looked at Tamara calmly.

"So the money went to your daughter."

She paused.

"And I’m supposed to pay it back."

A small smile appeared on her face.

"Interesting logic."

Tamara's expression hardened.

"Watch your tone, Vera."

"My son is your husband."

"His problems are your problems."

Vera leaned back in her chair.

"No."

The answer was so calm that it surprised her mother-in-law.

"No?"

Tamara laughed.

"Excuse me?"

"Marriage means sharing everything."

"Joy."

"Problems."

"Debt."

Vera nodded slowly.

"I agree that marriage means sharing."

"But sharing doesn't mean one person makes decisions and the other person pays the consequences."

Tamara's eyes narrowed.

"You always were too independent."

"That's what worries me."

"My son needs a wife who supports him, not one who questions him."

Vera looked toward the window.

For years, she had tried to build a peaceful relationship with Tamara.

She visited.

She helped.

She listened.

But she had always noticed one thing.

Tamara never asked what Vera wanted.

Only what Vera could provide.

"So tell me something," Vera said.

"When Igor borrowed the money..."

"Did he tell me?"

Silence.

Tamara looked away.

That was enough of an answer.

Vera nodded.

"I see."

"He made a financial decision without me."

"He hid it from me."

"And now you want me to accept responsibility."

"Because I'm his wife."

Tamara immediately answered:

"Exactly."

Vera smiled.

"Then perhaps we should talk about another thing."

"What thing?"

Vera stood up.

She walked to the cabinet near the living room.

From inside, she took a small folder.

Tamara watched her carefully.

"What is that?"

Vera returned to the table.

She placed the folder down.

"Something I found yesterday."

Tamara's confident expression changed.

Just slightly.

But Vera noticed.

She opened the folder.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

A bank transfer document.

Tamara frowned.

"What does this have to do with anything?"

Vera slid it across the table.

"Read the name of the recipient."

Tamara looked down.

Her face changed.

The money hadn't gone to a business.

It hadn't gone to an investment.

It had gone directly to:

Larisa Sergeevna.

Her daughter.

Tamara's own daughter.

For the first time since entering the house...

She was silent.

Vera folded her hands.

"So let's make sure I understand."

"Igor borrowed money."

"He lied to me."

"He transferred everything to Larisa."

"And now you came here demanding that I pay."

Tamara quickly grabbed the paper.

"This doesn't prove anything."

"It proves enough."

"No."

Tamara's voice became sharper.

"You don't understand family."

"Family protects each other."

Vera looked at her.

"Does family also hide the truth from each other?"

The question hit harder than shouting.

Tamara stood up.

"You are turning against my son."

"No."

Vera remained seated.

"I'm asking my husband to be responsible for his own choices."

The front door suddenly opened.

Both women turned.

Igor walked inside.

He froze when he saw them.

His mother.

His wife.

The document on the table.

His face went pale.

"Vera..."

She looked at him.

"How long were you planning to keep this from me?"

Igor opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Tamara immediately stepped forward.

"Igor, don't let her attack you."

But Vera raised her hand.

"No."

"Let him answer."

The room became silent.

Igor looked between them.

Then he lowered his eyes.

"I was going to tell you."

"When?"

"After I fixed it."

Vera laughed softly.

A sad laugh.

"After you fixed it?"

"With what?"

"With my money?"

Igor flinched.

That was the answer.

Vera looked at her husband.

"I stood beside you when you had nothing."

"I supported your dreams."

"I trusted you."

"But you made a decision that could destroy our future..."

"And you didn't even think I deserved to know."

Igor whispered:

"I'm sorry."

But Vera noticed something.

His apology wasn't the first thing he felt.

Fear was.

Fear of being exposed.

Fear of losing control.

Then Tamara suddenly said something that made Vera freeze.

"Fine."

"If you won't help him..."

"I'll tell her the truth."

Igor's face changed instantly.

"Mom."

Too late.

Tamara looked directly at Vera.

"Your husband didn't just borrow money for Larisa's business."

She smiled coldly.

"There is another debt."

Vera frowned.

"What debt?"

Tamara leaned forward.

"The kind that could ruin everything."

She placed another document on the table.

"This one is in your husband's name."

Vera looked down.

And her heart stopped.

Because the signature at the bottom...

May you like

Was not Igor's.

It was hers.
