CHAPTER 2: THE VIDEO INSIDE THE TOY

Silence.

The entire room froze.

Even my mother-in-law stopped moving.

“…what is that?” she whispered.

My husband stepped forward.

Slow.

Too slow.

“No…” he said.

My daughter was still crying.

I pulled her tighter behind me.

“What is it?” I asked again.

My husband didn’t answer.

He picked up the tiny device.

Hands trembling slightly.

Then—

it turned on automatically.

A screen projected from it.

Video started playing.

A hospital room.

A woman lying in bed.

Weak.

Connected to machines.

My breath caught.

Because I recognized her instantly.

Me.

But younger.

Sick.

Before I had met my husband.

A recorded voice played:

“If you are watching this… then the system has activated.”

My mother-in-law stepped back.

“What is this nonsense?”

My husband whispered:

“…shut up.”

The video continued.

Another voice appeared.

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Cold.

Familiar.

It said:

“She must not know the child is already registered.”

My heart stopped.

“What child?” I whispered.

My husband’s face went pale.

The video shifted.

Documents appeared.

My daughter’s name.

But under a different guardian.

Not me.

Not my husband.

My mother-in-law suddenly shouted:

“TURN THAT OFF!”

But my husband didn’t move.

Because the next frame changed everything.

It showed him.

Signing papers.

While my daughter was still a baby.

And under it…

a clause:

EMERGENCY CUSTODY TRANSFER UPON FAMILY STABILITY FAILURE

My legs almost gave out.

“What is this?” I whispered again.

My husband dropped the device.

It kept playing on the floor.

And then the final sentence came through the speaker:

“The doll contains full custody override activation protocol.”

My mother-in-law froze.

“…override what?”

My husband didn’t look at her.

He was staring at me.

May you like

And whispered something I will never forget:

“You were never supposed to see this.”
