Chapter 4 - THE STORY THEY BUILT

By morning, the story was online.

Not the truth.

A version.

MAJORITY OWNER HID IDENTITY FROM EXECUTIVE HUSBAND.

SECRET ACQUISITION RAISES CONFLICT QUESTIONS.

MARRIAGE REVENGE OR MARKET MANIPULATION?

Julian had always been good at strategy.

Camilla was better at headlines.

Together they moved fast.

Their lawyer issued a statement claiming I had secretly targeted Aurelia after “marital tensions.”

They implied I used confidential information obtained through Julian.

They said the party confrontation was “staged.”

They said the shoulder incident was “mischaracterized.”

That word almost impressed me.

Mischaracterized.

As if bruises needed public relations.

My board called an emergency meeting.

One director, James Porter, looked nervous.

“Audrey, we need to discuss recusal.”

“From what?”

“Aurelia matters.”

“I own Northstar.”

“You also married a senior Aurelia officer.”

“He knew nothing.”

“How do we prove that?”

I hated the question because it was fair.

Our deal files were clean.

Independent sourcing.

External diligence.

Committee votes.

But the photo of Aurelia circled in my home office looked ugly.

Rebecca asked.

“When did you write that?”

I studied the image.

“I didn’t.”

Everyone went still.

“What?”

“That is not my handwriting.”

Forensic review began.

Then another problem hit.

Aurelia’s board received an anonymous package.

Inside were printouts of emails that appeared to show me asking a Northstar analyst to “push valuation lower before Julian sees the file.”

Fake.

But good.

Too good.

Our servers showed no such messages.

Metadata showed the PDFs were created on a machine inside Aurelia.

Someone was planting evidence.

Julian called.

This time I answered.

“You need to stop this.”

He sounded tired.

“Stop what?”

“The media.”

“I didn’t leak anything.”

“Camilla did?”

Silence.

“Julian.”

“I told her to protect me.”

“There it is.”

He exhaled.

“You humiliated me in front of two hundred people.”

“I did not hit your shoulder.”

“Stop saying that.”

“No.”

He went quiet.

Then.

“Withdraw the audit.”

“No.”

“Step back from Aurelia.”

“No.”

“Then I’ll fight.”

“I know.”

A pause.

“You always think being calm makes you right.”

“No.”

“I think evidence helps.”

He hung up.

Ten minutes later, my bank froze one of my personal investment accounts pending review.

Not Northstar.

Mine.

A court petition had been filed overnight.

Petitioner.

Julian Vance.

Claim.

Marital assets had been used to acquire Aurelia without spousal consent.

He was trying to freeze my control before the board could remove him.

And someone had helped him file faster than any normal lawyer could.
