CHAPTER 2 — THE TEST
CHAPTER 2 — THE TEST
Mia did it anyway.
She needed the truth.
The DNA lab was quiet when she submitted the sample.
“Standard processing,” the technician said.
“Rush it,” Mia replied.
She didn’t sleep that night.
The results came back at 9:11 AM.
She opened the envelope in her car.
Her hands were shaking.
Then she read it.
NO MATCH FOUND.
She blinked.
Read it again.
No match.
Not partial.
Not degraded.
Nothing.
Mia whispered, “That’s not possible…”
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A voice said:
“You tested him, didn’t you?”
Her stomach dropped.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then:
“The real question is… why did he let you?”
She rushed home.
He was there.
Standing in her living room.
Waiting.
Like he already knew.
“You did it,” he said calmly.
Mia held up the result. “Who are you?!”
He looked at the paper.
Then smiled slightly.
“I told you not to do that.”
Suddenly—knock at the door.
Hard.
Urgent.
Mia froze.
The man didn’t move.
The knocking turned into pounding.
Then a voice outside:
“POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR!”
Mia looked at him.
“Who did you bring here?!”
He sighed.
“I didn’t bring them.”
May you like
Beat.
“They found me.”
