Chapter 14 - FIRE IN THE ARCHIVE

Smoke moved faster than fear.

Within seconds, alarms screamed through the estate.

Sprinklers activated in the north corridor.

Owen shouted orders.

"Evacuate the main hall."

Daniel stayed seated.

That told me everything.

"You expected this."

He smiled.

"Expected what?"

"Don't."

I stepped toward him.

"You brought someone inside."

"Prove it."

"Later."

I turned to Owen.

"Archive."

"No."

"That's where they're going."

"Fire team handles it."

"The original trust records are there."

"Copies exist."

"Not all."

Dad grabbed my arm.

"Elena."

I looked at him.

"What isn't copied?"

His expression answered.

"The original 1946 instrument."

My stomach dropped.

"Why isn't it digitized?"

"It is."

"But?"

"The seal."

Miriam understood.

"The original seal establishes authenticity for several historical property rights."

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

One piece of paper.

One seal.

Decades of legal leverage.

Daniel laughed softly.

"Empires always come down to paper."

I turned.

"You planned this."

He didn't answer.

Adrian stepped toward his father.

"Who did you send?"

Daniel smiled.

"Someone loyal."

Julian froze.

Then:

"Grant."

I shook my head.

"Grant is in custody."

Julian looked toward Thomas.

"No."

Thomas went pale.

"Don't."

Julian stared.

"Your driver."

Thomas's face collapsed.

Owen was already checking.

"The driver who brought Thomas isn't on our authorized list."

Adrian turned.

"You said he was mine."

Thomas whispered:

"I thought he was."

Everything moved at once.

Owen sent teams toward the archive.

Security secured Daniel.

Julian followed me toward the corridor.

"You're not going in."

"Neither are you."

"Elena."

"You're still recovering from being shot."

"Then walk faster."

Smoke thickened.

We reached the north stairwell.

A staff member rushed out coughing.

"Someone locked the archive doors."

"From inside?"

"I don't know."

Owen appeared.

"Thermal shows one person inside."

"Alive?"

"Moving."

Dad arrived behind us.

"Do not enter."

I looked at him.

"You keep saying that."

"And you keep ignoring me."

"Correct."

Owen grabbed a fire extinguisher.

"We breach together."

The archive doors were old oak.

Electronic lock.

Disabled.

Owen used a manual release.

Nothing.

Julian pointed.

"Service corridor."

"What?"

"There is a conservation entrance."

Dad looked surprised.

"How do you know?"

Julian stared at him.

"I spent nine years learning your buildings."

Of course he did.

The betrayal became useful.

We circled.

Smoke pushed under the side door.

Owen broke the panel.

Inside, flames climbed one wall.

A man stood near the central display case.

Thomas's driver.

He held the original trust document.

"Stop."

Owen shouted.

The man turned.

Then threw the document toward the fire.

Julian moved before anyone else.

He lunged.

Caught the leather case in midair.

Then collapsed hard against a table.

His wound reopened instantly.

"Julian."

I ran toward him.

The driver tried to escape.

Owen tackled him.

Fire crews entered seconds later.

I grabbed the leather case.

The edges were scorched.

But intact.

Julian looked pale.

Blood spread beneath his shirt.

"Did I finally do something useful?"

I stared at him.

"Don't make jokes."

"Wasn't a joke."

Paramedics arrived.

Again.

I almost laughed from exhaustion.

They lifted him.

He grabbed my hand.

"Daniel."

"What?"

"He never wanted Adrian to inherit."

I frowned.

"What?"

"He told me."

"When?"

"In the car."

"Then why demand my resignation?"

Julian's face tightened with pain.

"Because he wants the trust vacant."

"Why?"

"If Protector resigns and designated succession fails, trustees vote."

I looked toward Dad.

He heard.

His face changed.

"Thomas."

I froze.

Thomas was still a trustee.

Despite everything.

He had never been formally removed.

Miriam swore.

"If Elena resigns, Thomas could manipulate a vote."

"But Daniel hates Thomas."

Julian shook his head.

"He doesn't need Thomas to win."

"Then what?"

"Chaos."

He was wheeled away.

I turned toward Daniel.

Security had him seated under guard.

"You wanted the Protector seat empty."

He looked at me.

"Temporary."

"Why?"

"Because structures fail during transition."

"You wanted a window."

"Yes."

"For what?"

He smiled.

"To transfer the land."

My blood ran cold.

"To whom?"

"Nobody you know."

Miriam stepped closer.

"You can't transfer trust property."

Daniel smiled at her.

"Not legally."

That word changed everything.

"Forgery."

Dad whispered.

Daniel nodded.

"Charles taught me."

The circle closed.

My grandfather taught Daniel fraud.

Daniel spent decades perfecting it.

Now he intended to use it against the trust itself.

"Documents?"

I asked.

"Already prepared."

"Where?"

"Safe."

"Who has them?"

Daniel said nothing.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Who?"

His father smiled.

"Your mother would be disappointed in you."

Adrian struck him.

One punch.

Hard.

Daniel fell sideways.

Security restrained Adrian.

"Stop."

I grabbed him.

He shook me off.

"He used her name."

"I know."

"He doesn't get to."

"I know."

Daniel wiped blood from his lip.

Then laughed.

"You see?"

He looked at me.

"Blood always wins."

"No."

I stared at him.

"Choice wins."

Daniel's smile faded.

Owen dragged the captured driver into the hall.

"His name is Patrick Sloan."

Miriam froze.

"Sloan?"

I looked at her.

"What?"

She turned toward the remote board connection.

"Margaret Sloan."

Bellavere's board chair.

My stomach dropped.

"Related?"

Owen checked.

"Son."

Everything went silent.

Margaret Sloan.

The woman who chaired the emergency board meeting.

The woman who suspended Julian.

The woman who appeared to support the investigation.

Her son had just tried to burn our archive.

I stared at Daniel.

"You have someone on the Bellavere board."

He smiled.

"Had."

I called Margaret.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Marcus called me seconds later.

"Elena."

"What?"

"Margaret is at headquarters."

"Doing what?"

"She convened an emergency vote."

My blood chilled.

"For what?"

"Sale of Bellavere International assets."

"To whom?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Meridian Crown."

Daniel started laughing.

The fire wasn't the attack.

It was the distraction.

While we protected the trust, Margaret was trying to transfer the company.

And if she succeeded before we stopped her, Daniel would finally own the operating empire even if he never touched the land.
