Chapter 12 - THE SON THEY HID

Adrian called me that night.
No warning.
No blocked number.
He used a Swiss line.
I answered.
"Are you working with Daniel?"
Silence.
Then:
"Good evening to you too."
"Answer me."
"No."
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
"He knew you were financing Meridian."
"Yes."
"You knew he was alive."
Another pause.
"Yes."
My grip tightened.
"So you lied to me."
"I withheld."
"That's a prettier word."
"Your family uses it frequently."
"I don't."
"Not yet."
"Stop."
My voice sharpened.
"Did you know Daniel had Julian?"
"No."
"Do you know where he is?"
"No."
"Do you know what Daniel wants?"
"Yes."
I froze.
"What?"
"Legitimacy."
"For you."
"Yes."
There it was.
"Did you ask him to do this?"
"No."
"Would you accept Protector authority if I resigned?"
A long silence.
"Not like this."
"That's not no."
"It's not yes either."
"Adrian."
"I spent forty years being told my mother made a mistake by loving my father."
His voice changed.
"Then I learned your family erased her child from its history."
"You were not erased by me."
"No."
"But you benefited from the erasure."
I closed my eyes.
That was difficult because it was partly true.
I had inherited stability built on secrets I didn't know existed.
That didn't make me guilty of creating them.
But innocence and benefit can coexist.
"What do you want?"
"I want Rebecca restored to the record."
"Done."
Silence.
"What?"
"I said done."
"You can't just—"
"I can."
I sat at my desk.
"Her files are going into the disclosure package."
Adrian said nothing.
"Her marriage."
"Her son."
"The accident."
"The report."
"Everything."
Still silence.
"And your claim will be reviewed independently."
He finally spoke.
"You'd do that?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because hiding it got us here."
Adrian breathed slowly.
Then:
"Daniel won't allow that."
"Why?"
"Because truth isn't enough for him anymore."
"What does he want?"
"He wants your family to confess publicly."
"To what?"
"Everything."
"Some things are true."
"Some aren't."
"Which?"
Adrian sighed.
"Daniel believes Charles ordered Rebecca's death."
My stomach tightened.
"Do you?"
"I believed it for years."
"And now?"
"I'm not sure."
"Thomas?"
"He knows more than he's admitted."
"Is he alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"With me."
I froze.
"So you did take him."
"Yes."
"Release him."
"Not yet."
"Adrian."
"He confessed."
My pulse jumped.
"To what?"
"Moving money."
"We know that."
"Helping Daniel forge documents."
"We suspected."
"Covering up Rebecca's meeting."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"What meeting?"
"The night she died."
"With Thomas?"
"No."
I stopped.
"Who?"
"Your mother."
My breath caught.
"Mom says Rebecca called Thomas."
"She did."
"But after that, she went to your mother."
"Why?"
"To give her the second ledger."
I stared toward the safe.
"But Mom never had it."
"Exactly."
"Then who took it?"
"Thomas."
My skin prickled.
"How?"
"Rebecca gave it to Evelyn."
"Thomas followed her."
"And stole it?"
"Eventually."
"Why?"
"Because his name was inside."
I stood.
"Adrian, who damaged the brakes?"
"I don't know."
"Thomas?"
"He says no."
"Do you believe him?"
"No."
"Do you believe Daniel?"
"No."
"Good."
That surprised him.
"Why good?"
"Because maybe one person in this mess still understands that blood doesn't make someone reliable."
He laughed softly.
Then became serious.
"Elena."
"What?"
"Daniel is more dangerous than you think."
"I know."
"No."
"You know he's angry."
"You don't know how patient he is."
My stomach tightened.
"What did he do?"
"Twenty-six years ago, he created three identities."
"Why?"
"To survive."
"Or hide."
"Both."
"He built assets offshore."
"He tracked the Vale family."
"He watched Julian."
"He watched me."
I froze.
"Watched you?"
"From childhood."
"Did he raise you?"
"No."
"My foster parents did."
"Foster?"
"Rebecca died when I was eight."
"Where was Daniel?"
"Gone."
"So your own father abandoned you."
"Yes."
"Then why help him?"
Silence.
That was the wound.
"I didn't."
Adrian's voice lowered.
"I thought Meridian was mine."
"What?"
"Daniel financed it through structures I didn't know he controlled."
I sat.
"So he used you too."
"Apparently."
"Does Thomas know?"
"He laughed when I told him."
"That's helpful."
"He said Daniel always made people feel like partners right before turning them into tools."
That sounded familiar.
Julian.
Thomas.
Adrian.
All of them convinced they were using someone.
All of them used.
"Where is Thomas?"
"I won't tell you."
"Then bring him Saturday."
"Daniel asked me to."
"So you are going."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because if I don't, he'll kill Julian."
I went still.
"You care about Julian?"
"He's my brother."
"Half-brother."
"Still my brother."
I stared into the darkness outside.
Family.
Always family.
Even broken.
Even poisoned.
Still pulling people toward fire.
"Then we cooperate."
Adrian laughed.
"Your father will hate that."
"He'll survive."
"What do you need?"
"Everything Thomas told you."
"That's a lot."
"Start with Rebecca."
Adrian was silent for several seconds.
Then he began.
Thomas admitted that Rebecca had discovered Daniel and Charles's fraud.
She also discovered Thomas had been diverting small amounts through an investment vehicle.
Not millions.
At first.
But enough to destroy his standing with Grandma.
Rebecca threatened to tell her.
Thomas begged her not to.
Then Daniel offered Thomas a solution.
Help retrieve the second ledger.
In exchange, Daniel would protect Thomas.
Thomas agreed.
He followed Rebecca the night she met my mother.
But when she left, someone else was already following her.
"Who?"
Adrian said:
"He says he doesn't know."
"Do you believe him?"
"No."
"What happened?"
"Rebecca crashed."
"Thomas arrived after?"
"He claims he did."
"And the ledger?"
"He took it from the wreck."
My stomach turned.
"He left her there?"
"He says she was already dead."
"Convenient."
"Yes."
"Then what?"
"He hid the ledger."
"For twenty-eight years?"
"No."
"Where?"
"He gave it to Daniel."
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
"And Daniel kept it."
"Yes."
"Until now."
"Yes."
"Why did Thomas work with Julian?"
"To get the ledger back."
There it was.
Thomas's true motive.
Not only jealousy.
Not only money.
Blackmail.
Daniel had evidence that could destroy him.
Thomas had spent decades trying to get it back.
"Meridian was supposed to pay Daniel?"
"Partly."
"How much?"
"One hundred million."
"Jesus."
"Daniel refused."
"Why?"
"Because he wanted the trust."
I leaned back.
"Not money."
"Never money."
Then Adrian said something quietly.
"There's another name in the ledger."
"What name?"
"Your father's."
My stomach dropped.
"What?"
"Alexander Vale."
"For what?"
"Payments."
"Illegal?"
"Unknown."
"Dates?"
"1998."
I closed my eyes.
Not again.
"What did Dad do?"
"Ask him."
"I am asking you."
"I don't know."
"Do you have photographs?"
"Yes."
"Send them."
Adrian hesitated.
Then files arrived.
Three pages.
My grandfather's handwriting.
A transfer authorization.
Alexander Vale.
Five million.
Then another.
Three million.
Then another.
Two million.
Ten million total.
Purpose codes were vague.
D.C.
Resolution.
Legal containment.
I stared.
Dad had told me Mom paid Daniel.
Maybe Dad had too.
Maybe everyone had.
I called him into the room.
He looked at the pages.
His face changed immediately.
"Where did you get these?"
"Adrian."
Dad sat.
"What were the payments?"
He rubbed his forehead.
"Settlement support."
"You said Mom paid Daniel."
"She did."
"And you?"
"I reimbursed her family trust."
I stared.
"Why hide that?"
"Because the money came from Vale reserves."
"Unauthorized?"
"Temporarily."
My heart sank.
"Did Grandma approve?"
"Afterward."
"Before?"
"No."
"So you violated the trust."
"Yes."
There it was.
No excuse.
No softened wording.
Just yes.
"Why?"
"To protect your mother."
"From what?"
"Exposure."
"For hiding the mechanic report?"
Dad's face went still.
"No."
I froze.
"Then what?"
He looked at Mom in the doorway.
She looked terrified.
"Dad."
He whispered:
"Your mother was with Rebecca the night she died."
Mom closed her eyes.
Everything stopped.
"At the crash?"
Mom nodded.
"Before."
I stood.
"You said Rebecca left you."
"She did."
"Then?"
"I followed her."
"Why?"
"Because I was afraid."
"Of Thomas?"
"Of everyone."
"What happened?"
Mom started crying.
"Rebecca stopped on the roadside."
"Why?"
"To confront the car behind her."
My pulse hammered.
"Whose car?"
She looked at Dad.
Then at me.
"Your grandfather's."
I stared.
"Grandpa was dead."
"No."
Mom's voice cracked.
"His old car."
"Who was driving it?"
She whispered:
"Thomas."
I froze.
"So he was following her."
"Yes."
"What happened?"
"I stopped behind them."
"And?"
"Rebecca got out."
"Thomas got out."
"They argued."
"About the ledger?"
"Yes."
"Then what?"
"Thomas grabbed her."
My hands went cold.
"Did he hurt her?"
"He pushed her."
"How hard?"
"She fell."
Mom covered her mouth.
"She hit her head."
I stopped breathing.
"Was she alive?"
"Yes."
"Then why did she drive?"
"She didn't."
I stared.
"What?"
Mom's voice became barely audible.
"Thomas put her back in the car."
My blood chilled.
"Why?"
"He panicked."
"What did he do?"
"He started the car."
"No."
Dad stepped toward Mom.
"Evelyn."
She looked at him.
"You never told me this."
"No."
Dad looked shattered.
"What did he do?"
Mom whispered:
"He pushed the car down the slope."
I felt the room tilt.
Thomas didn't cut Rebecca's brakes.
He didn't need to.
He staged the crash.
My mother watched it happen.
And then she helped hide it.
I looked at her.
"Why?"
She cried harder.
"Because he was twenty-four."
I stared in disbelief.
"She was twenty-nine."
"I know."
"She had a child."
"I know."
"You protected him."
"I know."
"You protected Thomas."
"I know."
Dad turned away.
His face had collapsed.
For the first time, I understood why Daniel wanted our name erased.
Not because our family was innocent.
Because parts of it were guilty.
And the worst part was that Julian had spent nine years trying to destroy me for crimes I didn't commit.
While the people who did commit them sat at my dinner table.
My phone vibrated.
Adrian.
One message.
NOW YOU KNOW WHY SATURDAY HAS TO HAPPEN.
I looked at my mother.
Then my father.
And for the first time, I agreed with him.
Saturday had to happen.
May you like
Not for revenge.
For exposure.
