CHAPTER 2: THE MAN MY HUSBAND FEARED
"Dad?" Ryan stammered.
Emily froze.
It was Charles Carter, Ryan's father.
One of the most powerful businessmen in the state.
Charles looked furious.
"I leave a board meeting early to see my first grandchild, and this is what I walk into?"
Ryan immediately stepped away from Vanessa.
"Dad, I can explain."
"Good," Charles said coldly. "Explain why you're humiliating your wife while she's giving birth."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Sir, with all due respect, Ryan and Emily's marriage was already over—"
Charles cut her off.
"I wasn't speaking to you."
Vanessa instantly fell silent.
Ryan swallowed.
"Dad, Emily and I haven't been happy for years."
Charles looked at Emily lying in the hospital bed, exhausted and crying.
Then he turned back to his son.
"Even if that's true, what kind of man brings his mistress into a delivery room?"
Ryan had no answer.
Suddenly, Emily cried out in pain.
The monitors began beeping rapidly.
"Doctor!" a nurse shouted.
Everything became chaotic.
Doctors rushed into the room.
"Everyone except the medical staff needs to leave now!"
As Ryan moved toward Emily, she grabbed his wrist.
"Don't touch me."
Ryan stopped.
Emily looked him straight in the eyes.
"If anything happens to me or this baby, you'll never forgive yourself."
Seconds later, the doors slammed shut.
Ryan was left standing outside.
Then a doctor rushed out.
