Chapter 17 - The Three QuartersSadie took the quarters to school.

Callum worried.

Of course he did.

Ivy told him to stop.

At pickup, Sadie ran toward the car carrying a tiny plastic ring.

Blue.

Cheap.

One quarter from the classroom prize shop.

Callum smiled.

“Nice.”

“I spent one.”

“I see.”

She opened her other hand.

Two quarters remained.

“What are those for?”

“I don't know yet.”

“Okay.”

Sadie looked suspicious.

“You're not going to tell me to save them?”

“No.”

“Grandpa says save money.”

“Grandpa can have opinions.”

“Grandma says don't waste.”

“Also an opinion.”

Sadie grinned.

“Mom says I can buy stickers.”

“Your mother is reckless.”

Ivy hit his shoulder from the passenger seat.

That weekend they went to breakfast.

When the server brought pancakes, Sadie asked for extra syrup.

Then immediately looked at Callum.

He waited.

She did not ask how much.

Progress.

After breakfast, she placed one quarter on the table.

Callum frowned.

“What's that?”

“Tip.”

“One quarter is not a great tip.”

Sadie looked offended.

“I'm six.”

“Fair.”

He added money.

Sadie watched.

“This is different?”

“What?”

“Giving money.”

Callum thought.

“Yes.”

“Because she worked?”

“Yes.”

“And I choose?”

“Yes.”

“Not because she let me sit here?”

Callum's throat tightened.

“No.”

Sadie nodded.

“Okay.”

She left the quarter.

One remained.

Outside, they passed a fountain.

Sadie held the last coin.

Ivy said, “Make a wish.”

Sadie looked at the water.

Then closed her fist.

“No.”

Callum smiled.

“You don't want a wish?”

“I want to keep it.”

“Why?”

“Because it's mine.”

The answer was so simple Callum almost missed its importance.

She put the quarter in her pocket.

Not to pay a debt.

Not to protect her father.

Not because water or food or affection had been used.

Because she wanted to keep a quarter.

That night, Walter emailed Callum.

No demand.

No family balance.

One sentence.

I finally understand why she needed those coins to belong to her.

Callum read it.

Then closed the laptop.

He did not reply.

Understanding was useful.

Sadie was sleeping down the hall.

That was more important.
