Chapter 18 - Seat 14A

One year after Flight 608, Ethan stood at the same gate with a boarding pass in his hand.

Natalie wore her uniform again.

Not because she had returned to the life they had before.

That life was gone.

She flew part-time now.

No more picking up every extra trip.

No more pretending schedules were not affecting them.

No more using silence as a substitute for difficult conversations.

Her medical team had cleared her.

The airline had welcomed her back.

And on their thirteenth anniversary, she had one flight.

Boston to Chicago.

Flight 608.

Ethan had booked seat 14A.

This time, she knew.

“You could sit in first class,” Natalie said as they walked through the terminal.

“I like 14A.”

“You like drama.”

“I learned from your family.”

She gave him a look.

“Too soon.”

“It has been a year.”

“Still too soon.”

They laughed.

That mattered.

Allison was serving a prison sentence.

Natalie had not visited.

She received letters.

Most remained unopened.

One day she might read them.

Or not.

Forgiveness, Dr. Shah once told her, was not a medical requirement.

Caleb had completed his sentence and started repaying restitution.

Ethan had spoken to him once.

The conversation lasted seven minutes.

It was not reconciliation.

It was a door no longer welded shut.

Rebecca met them at the gate.

Captain Mercer leaned from the cockpit as Ethan boarded.

“No announcements today.”

Ethan pointed at him.

“Good.”

Daniel grinned.

Natalie took her position near the front cabin.

Passengers boarded.

Bags went overhead.

Seat belts clicked.

Routine returned.

But routine no longer meant invisibility.

When the aircraft pushed back, Ethan watched Natalie.

She caught him staring.

“What?”

He shook his head.

“Nothing.”

She narrowed her eyes.

“Tell me.”

“I was thinking about last year.”

“So was I.”

The plane paused before the runway.

Natalie came down the aisle for the final cabin check.

She stopped beside 14A.

Ethan looked up.

“Ma’am, is there a problem?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

She leaned closer.

“You’re in my life again next year too.”

He smiled.

“That sounds like a threat.”

“It is.”

She kissed two fingers and pressed them lightly to his shoulder before continuing down the aisle.

The engines rose.

The plane accelerated.

Ethan looked out the window as Boston dropped beneath them.

For years, he had believed marriage was mostly about staying.

Staying through schedules.

Staying through disappointment.

Staying through fear.

He had been wrong.

Staying was only the physical part.

The harder thing was telling the truth while you stayed.

Natalie had learned that secrecy could feel like protection right up until it became a wall.

Ethan had learned that resentment could feel like patience right up until someone else used the silence against you.

They had not returned to the marriage they had before cancer.

They had built a different one.

Less polished.

More deliberate.

And much harder to manipulate.

Halfway to Chicago, Captain Mercer came over the speaker.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we’re expecting a smooth ride today.”

Ethan smiled.

Then Daniel added, “And because I have been specifically threatened by one passenger in 14A, there will be no personal announcements.”

The cabin laughed.

Natalie covered her face.

Ethan raised both hands innocently.

A passenger across the aisle asked, “Inside joke?”

Ethan looked toward his wife.

“Long story.”

Natalie smiled.

“Very long.”

For once, there was nothing hidden behind the smile.

No diagnosis.

No forged email.

No fake scan.

No sister waiting to decide her future.

Just Natalie.

Alive.

Working.

Looking at him.

When they landed in Chicago, she took his hand in the jet bridge.

“Happy anniversary.”

Ethan squeezed it.

“Happy anniversary.”

Then she pulled him closer.

“And next year?”

“What about it?”

“You’re booking the flight.”

He laughed.

“Only if I get 14A.”

She kissed him.

“Deal.”

And this time, neither of them needed a surprise.
