Chapter 12 - The Sister Who Wouldn’t Stop

Police pursued Allison for seventeen miles.

She drove fast enough to be dangerous but not skilled enough to escape.

The chase ended when she clipped a guardrail on a wet curve and spun into a shallow drainage ditch.

No serious injuries.

No dramatic last stand.

Just airbags, mud, and a woman who had spent weeks controlling everybody suddenly unable to control the direction of a car.

Inside the SUV, police recovered Natalie’s documents.

The safe.

Two phones.

Three credit cards in Natalie’s name.

And a notebook.

That notebook changed the case.

Allison had kept records.

Not because she felt guilty.

Because she felt entitled to be paid.

Maria Chen — 37k recovered.

Ward estate — 52k protected.

Simmons — 18k management.

Natalie — projected 410k.

Ethan stared at the final line.

“Projected?”

Moreno nodded.

“Looks like what she expected to control through insurance, retirement, and medical authority.”

Natalie was taken back to Boston under police escort.

Allison was treated at a hospital and arrested.

Nolan agreed to cooperate.

Dr. Vane’s clinic was searched.

The airline union opened an internal audit.

By noon, the anniversary flight Ethan had booked felt like something that had happened years earlier.

He sat beside Natalie’s hospital bed.

No sister.

No captain.

No detectives.

Just them.

Natalie looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry.”

Ethan stared at the floor.

“For which part?”

“All of it.”

“That’s too big a word.”

“I know.”

He looked at her.

“What hurt most wasn’t the cancer.”

Natalie’s eyes filled.

“It was that everybody else knew.”

“Yes.”

“I was scared.”

“I know.”

“I thought you were leaving.”

“You could have asked.”

“I was afraid you’d say yes.”

Ethan’s throat tightened.

“So you trusted a screenshot more than twelve years?”

Natalie looked away.

“That sounds terrible when you say it.”

“It was terrible when you did it.”

She nodded.

No defense.

No excuse.

That mattered.

Ethan stood and walked to the window.

“I need you to understand something. Allison manipulated you. She lied to you. She stole from you. But she did not make you shut me out.”

Natalie started crying.

“I know.”

“I can forgive fear. I don’t know yet if I can forgive being removed from my own marriage.”

She whispered, “Are you leaving now?”

Ethan looked back.

“No.”

Hope flashed across her face.

He raised a hand.

“That is not the same as saying everything is fine.”

Natalie nodded.

“I’ll take that.”

A knock came at the door.

Dr. Shah entered.

“Good news first. Natalie’s liver numbers are already improving.”

Ethan exhaled.

“And treatment?”

“We can begin tomorrow.”

Natalie smiled weakly.

Then Dr. Shah’s expression became more serious.

“There’s one thing we need to discuss before we start.”

Natalie tensed.

“What?”

Dr. Shah sat down.

“The staging scan found something we didn’t expect.”

Ethan’s stomach dropped.

“Another tumor?”

“No.”

Dr. Shah looked at Natalie.

“Your lymphoma appears less advanced than the first imaging suggested.”

Natalie blinked.

“That’s good.”

“It is.”

“Then why do you look worried?”

“Because the original scan in your chart may not be yours.”
