Chapter 5 - THE DAUGHTER THEY SACRIFICE

Elena pushed through the boardroom doors before security could announce her.

Every screen showed her face.

Not a flattering one.

The news outlet had used an old photograph taken during a hearing, Elena looking down while photographers shouted questions unrelated to her.

Under it ran the words:

WHITMORE INSIDER DEAL?

“Turn it off.”

No one moved.

Elena grabbed the remote and killed the screens herself.

Charles sat at the head of the table.

Vale sat two seats to his right.

Vittorio had been kept outside.

That had been Charles’s condition.

Elena dropped the petition on the table.

“Who leaked it?”

Board member Harold Price removed his glasses.

“That is not our first concern.”

“It is mine.”

“Our first concern is lender confidence.”

“I kept those lenders from taking this company apart three times.”

Price’s eyes flicked toward Charles.

Elena saw it.

The decision had already been made.

Charles folded his hands.

“Elena, until this is resolved, you will take administrative leave.”

A muscle in her cheek jumped.

“You’re firing me.”

“No.”

“You’re putting me outside the building while somebody uses my credentials.”

“We cannot appear to interfere with an investigation.”

Elena leaned toward him.

“So you’ll interfere with me instead.”

Price slid a resolution across the table.

Temporary suspension of system access.

Suspension of signing authority.

Mandatory preservation order.

Elena read the first page.

Then the second.

Her name appeared twenty-three times.

Charles’s appeared twice.

She laughed once.

“You wrote the scapegoat version.”

Vale’s eyes stayed on the table.

Charles spoke carefully.

“I made a statement to the press.”

Elena looked up.

“What statement?”

“That the Newark transfer, if unauthorized, was conducted outside my knowledge.”

“If unauthorized?”

“Words matter right now.”

“They always mattered when you used them on me.”

Charles didn’t blink.

“I also stated that you acted independently in several financing matters.”

The room narrowed.

Elena placed both palms on the table.

“You told them I operated without authority?”

“You often did.”

“Because you ordered me to fix problems without leaving your fingerprints on them.”

Price shifted in his chair.

Elena looked around the table.

“Every person here knows that.”

Nobody met her eyes.

A new folder sat near the chairman’s seat.

Elena recognized the bank logo.

She reached for it.

Charles caught her wrist.

“Don’t.”

She looked down at his hand.

He released her.

Elena opened the folder.

Family trust guarantees.

Caroline Whitmore Trust.

Audrey Whitmore Trust.

Victoria Whitmore Trust.

Pledged as supplemental collateral.

Elena flipped pages faster.

Her sisters had never approved this.

At least not knowingly.

“You pledged their trusts.”

Charles kept his voice low.

“It was temporary.”

“How much?”

“Not relevant.”

“How much?”

Price cleared his throat.

“One hundred ten million in aggregate support.”

Elena looked at her father.

“So the daughters who matter were collateral too.”

His face tightened.

A notation sat beside the guarantee verification.

A.V.

Elena touched it.

“Authorized Verification?”

Vale answered.

“Yes.”

Too smooth.

She looked at him.

His right hand was bare again.

The silver signet ring from the camera came back to her.

A phone vibrated on the table.

Not hers.

Charles’s.

He looked at the screen and went white.

Elena reached for it.

Charles snatched the phone away.

“Who is it?”

“No one.”

The screen lit again.

CALL ME ALONE. NOW.

Elena saw only the words before Charles turned the display against his chest.

“Dad.”

He stood too quickly, knocking his chair backward.

“Meeting adjourned.”

Price frowned.

“We haven’t voted.”

“You will.”

Charles walked toward the private corridor behind the boardroom.

Elena stepped after him.

He pointed at her without turning around.

“Stay here.”

The door slammed.

Elena checked the time.

9:08 p.m.

Vale rose.

“I’ll find out what happened.”

“No.”

Elena blocked him.

“You stay where I can see you.”

Vale’s eyes narrowed, but he sat.

Seven minutes passed.

Then twelve.

At nineteen, Elena called Charles.

Straight to voicemail.

She crossed to the private corridor.

The executive elevator stood open.

Empty.

Charles’s security detail was gone.

Her phone vibrated.

VIDEO RECEIVED.

Elena opened it.

The image shook once, then steadied.

Charles sat tied to a metal chair.

Blood ran from his temple into his collar.

A distorted voice spoke behind the camera.

“Sign Halcyon Meridian over by midnight.”

Elena’s fingers locked around the phone.

Charles lifted his head.

His eyes found the camera.

“Elena.”

A hand struck him across the mouth.

He spat blood onto the floor.

Then he looked straight ahead again.

May you like

“Don’t sign anything.”

A gun rose behind his head.
