Chapter 10 - WHAT VITTORIO NEVER TOLD HER

Elena ended the call and threw the phone onto the desk.

“Talk.”

Vittorio looked at the cracked screen.

“Vale wants you angry.”

“He succeeded. Talk.”

Dominic shut the library doors.

Matteo stayed outside.

Vittorio removed his jacket and laid it over a chair as if he needed both hands free for the truth.

“Eighteen years ago, Whitmore Holdings was already overleveraged.”

Elena’s laugh was sharp.

“Apparently family tradition.”

“My father provided bridge capital.”

“To Charles?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Whitmore controlled logistics routes my family needed.”

“There it is.”

“I didn’t say it was charity.”

Elena folded her arms.

“Keep going.”

“Your mother reviewed the financing package. She found liabilities Charles had not disclosed.”

“What kind?”

“Side agreements. Hidden guarantees. Payments to shell companies.”

“A.V.”

Vittorio nodded.

“Margot believed Vale was building a shadow structure under Whitmore. My father believed Charles was part of it.”

“Was he?”

“Yes.”

The answer came without softness.

Elena’s jaw tightened.

“But not all of it.”

“No.”

Vittorio pulled an old photocopy from Dominic’s portfolio.

Halcyon Meridian formation papers.

Margot’s signature at the bottom.

Another signature below it.

LUCA MORETTI, WITNESS TO FUNDING INSTRUMENT.

Elena stared.

“Your father helped fund Halcyon.”

“He helped structure its protective debt.”

“Protective against what?”

“Charles.”

The word landed hard.

Vittorio continued.

“And anyone who could force Charles to strip the company.”

Elena paced once to the window and back.

“So Vale was right.”

“Partly.”

“I’m getting tired of that word.”

“Halcyon was created because Margot did not trust Charles with unrestricted control. She used Moretti debt as an external lock.”

“And you inherited the key.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because until Newark moved, Halcyon was dormant.”

“No.”

Elena stepped close enough to see the faint scar beneath Vittorio’s chin.

“That’s the legal answer. Why didn’t you tell me?”

His eyes stayed on hers.

“Because I didn’t know whether you were part of it.”

Elena stopped breathing for a beat.

“You thought I might be stealing from my own company.”

“I thought everyone in that house might be.”

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the library.

Dominic looked at the floor.

Vittorio’s face turned with the hit.

He straightened slowly.

Elena’s palm burned.

“Anything else?” she asked.

“Yes.”

Her hand dropped.

Vittorio reached into his shirt pocket and removed a small black flash drive.

“Your mother left my father a sealed recording.”

Elena stared at it.

“When?”

“Three weeks before she died.”

The room seemed to lose air.

“Died in a car accident.”

“That was the ruling.”

“You don’t believe it.”

“My father didn’t.”

“Did Charles?”

“I don’t know.”

Elena looked at the drive again.

“Why is it still sealed?”

“Instructions.”

“What instructions?”

“Open only if Halcyon activates.”

“And Newark activated it.”

“Yes.”

Dominic plugged the drive into an offline laptop.

One audio file appeared.

MARGOT_W_01.

Elena sat without deciding to.

Her fingertips pressed into the edge of the chair.

Dominic hit play.

Static.

Then a woman’s voice.

Older than Elena remembered.

Calmer too.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened to me.”

Elena’s throat closed.

Vittorio looked away.

Margot continued.

“I have made copies of the transfer records and hidden them where Charles cannot destroy them.”

A faint clink sounded in the recording.

A cup placed on a table.

“I need one point understood clearly.”

Elena leaned closer to the speaker.

“Charles is guilty of many things.”

May you like

A pause.

“But if I die, Charles Whitmore is not the man who killed me.”
