CHAPTER 5: THE FIRST ARREST

The morning of my mother's arrest, I didn't go to work. I sat on my back porch, wrapped in a blanket, watching the fog lift off the lake. I had known this was coming. I had prepared myself for it. But nothing could have prepared me for the phone call from my father.

"She's at the county jail," he said. "They're holding her until the bail hearing."

"How is she?"

"Angry. She's blaming you, of course. She says you destroyed the family."

"She destroyed the family, Dad. Not me."

"I know. I told her that. But she's not listening."

"She never listens."

My father sighed. "Bella, I want you to know—I'm proud of you. For standing up. For fighting back. I should have done it years ago."

"Thank you, Dad."

"Have you heard from Jacob?"

"No. He's not answering my calls."

"He's not answering mine either. Victoria has gone radio silent. I think they're scared."

"They should be scared. They were part of this."

"I know."

I ended the call and stared out at the lake. My mother was in jail. My brother had disappeared. My sister-in-law was hiding. And my father was finally, after all these years, telling me the truth.

But I didn't feel victorious. I felt hollow. Like I had won a battle I never wanted to fight.

I thought about the lake house. How it had been my sanctuary, my escape from the toxicity of my family. And how they had tried to take it from me, just like they had taken everything else.

But they hadn't succeeded.

I had my house back. My career was intact. My reputation was solid. And my mother was going to face the consequences of her actions.

I walked back inside and poured myself a cup of coffee. The kitchen was still being rebuilt, but the basic structure was in place. I could see the future taking shape—a home that was truly mine, a life that was truly mine.

And for the first time in a long time, I felt something that I had almost forgotten.

Hope.
