CHAPTER 16: THE LETTER FROM JACOB

A month later, I got a letter from Jacob. He had turned himself in. He was in county jail, awaiting trial for his role in the embezzlement.
Bella,
I know you probably won't read this, or if you do, you won't care. But I wanted to say I'm sorry.
I was selfish. I let Mom do everything for me, and I never stopped to think about what it was costing. Costing you. Costing her. Costing our family.
I'm in here now, and I have a lot of time to think. I'm not the person I want to be. But I want to change. I want to be better.
I know you don't owe me anything. But I hope that someday, you might be able to forgive me.
Your brother, Jacob
I read the letter twice. Then I folded it and put it in the same drawer where I kept my mother's letter.
I didn't write back.
Not because I was angry.
But because I didn't have anything to say.
May you like
Jacob had made his choices. And now he had to live with them.
Just like I had to live with mine.
