Chapter 2: The Roommate

“Who else has a key?” I yelled.
“Just you. Me. And… Dana,” Brian said.
Dana. His ex. The one he cheated on last month. The one we kicked out.

“She still had a copy?” I couldn’t believe it.
Brian buried his face in his hands. “I was gonna change the locks. Next week.”

We called the cops. “Can’t do anything,” they said. “Whoever signed it owns it. Possession is 9/10ths of the law.”
We called the lottery office. “If it’s signed and cashed, it’s theirs. Sorry.”

Brian was shaking. “I’m gonna text her.”
“Don’t,” I said. “Lawyer first.”
He already hit send: “DANA GIVE IT BACK OR I SWEAR”

Three dots. Then: “LOL. Should’ve treated me better. Bye, Brian.”
Blocked.

I grabbed my keys. “We’re going to her place.”
Brian stopped me. “Wait. What if it wasn’t her?”
He flipped his phone. The text was from a NEW number. And the hand in the photo… had a tattoo.
A snake.
Dana didn’t have tattoos.
But I did.
On my wrist.
From 3 years ago.
A snake.

To be continued…
