Chapter 3: No Mercy

Colonel Reed didn’t raise his voice. He simply smiled — the same cold smile he used before missions.

“Custody?” he said. “Over my dead body.”

The next two weeks became a war. Reed used every connection he had — military investigators, old friends in law enforcement, and hidden security footage from the mansion that showed Derek and Brooke beating Lila.

In court, Brooke played the victim. “I was scared of both of them! Derek hit me too when I tried to protect Lila!”

Derek nodded. “She’s unstable. The baby needs a real mother — Brooke.”

Lila broke down on the stand. “She’s the one who kicked me in the stomach… while laughing.”

Reed took the stand last. He laid out every piece of evidence calmly and clearly. The judge’s face grew darker with every new revelation.

When the DNA test came back proving Brooke was not pregnant at all — it had been another lie — the courtroom erupted.

Derek and Brooke were both arrested. Charges included domestic violence, fraud, attempted murder of an unborn child, and conspiracy.

Three months later, Lila gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Ethan.

In the hospital room, Reed held his grandson with tears in his eyes for the first time in decades. “He looks just like you did, sweetheart.”

Lila smiled tiredly, reaching for her father’s hand. “I don’t know what I would’ve done without you, Dad.”

“You never have to find out,” he said softly. “I’m not going anywhere.”

A year later, Lila had moved into a quiet house near the mountains. She opened a small flower shop and raised Ethan surrounded by love instead of fear.

Every weekend, Colonel Reed showed up with toys and stories, teaching his grandson how to be strong but kind.

Derek and Brooke lost everything — money, freedom, and reputation. The family they tried to destroy was now stronger than ever.

Sometimes, on quiet evenings, Lila would watch her father pushing Ethan on the swing and whisper, “Thank you for coming home, Dad.”

Reed would always reply the same way: “I’ll always come home to you.”
