MY BROTHER SOLD OUR FAMILY FARM WITHOUT TELLING ME... THEN A STRANGER DUG UP MY FATHER'S WATCH

Chapter 1: The Bulldozer

The bulldozer smashed through my father's barn while his funeral was still happening.

The crash echoed across the valley.

Everyone turned.

Mourners dropped their flowers.

My father's casket hadn't even reached the cemetery.

"What the hell?"

I started running.

My black dress caught on the fence, but I didn't stop.

Dust filled the air.

Wood splintered everywhere.

The old red barn...

The one my father built with his own hands...

Collapsed in front of my eyes.

"STOP!"

The machine kept moving.

I climbed onto the bulldozer.

The operator shut off the engine.

"I've got orders."

"From who?"

He pointed behind me.

I turned.

My older brother, Garrett Lawson, stepped out of a black pickup truck.

Designer sunglasses.

Expensive boots.

Not a single tear on his face.

"You should've stayed at the funeral."

My blood boiled.

"What are you doing?"

He shrugged.

"I sold the land."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

"You WHAT?"

"The papers were signed yesterday."

"That's impossible."

Garrett smirked.

"I'm the executor of Dad's estate."

The construction crew started laughing.

One worker kicked aside my father's old toolbox.

Another tossed family photographs into a dumpster.

Thirty-eight years of memories...

Thrown away like garbage.

I ran toward the dumpster.

Garrett grabbed my arm.

"It's over, Claire."

I ripped my arm free.

"No."

I climbed inside.

Searching through broken wood.

Rusty tools.

Old blankets.

Then my fingers touched something cold.

My father's pocket watch.

The one he never took off.

Except...

It wasn't broken.

It was ticking.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

The watch had stopped the day he died.

Everyone saw it.

Everyone.

So why...

Was it running again?

Then an elderly stranger standing near the fence whispered:

"Your father wanted you to find that."

I looked up.

I'd never seen the man before.

He tipped his hat.

May you like

Then quietly added:

"Now open it."
