Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Coup

At eleven exactly, Derek entered the Harrington Logistics boardroom.
He expected resistance.
He didn't expect me.
I was sitting in my father's chair.
Derek stopped.
"That's Thomas's seat."
"I know."
"Move."
"No."
Twelve board members watched us.
Charles Vane sat near the window.
Gray suit.
Silver hair.
Calm smile.
So we'd finally met.
Derek placed his folder on the table.
"Thomas Harrington is medically incapable of continuing as chairman."
Emily entered behind him.
Derek turned.
"Emily."
She ignored him.
Rebecca followed.
Then two outside trustees.
Derek's confidence flickered.
He recovered quickly.
"Good. Everyone's here."
Not everyone.
But he didn't know that yet.
He began presenting the restructuring.
Charts.
Debt forecasts.
Market risks.
He was good.
I'll give him that.
A convincing liar needs truth around the edges.
Then he produced the forged agreement.
"This document grants WCG Capital temporary voting authority."
I leaned back.
"Does it?"
"Yes."
"Interesting."
Derek glared at me.
"Do you have something to contribute?"
"I do."
I placed Dad's original trust on the table.
Charles Vane's smile disappeared.
Derek stared at it.
"What is that?"
"The document you should've found before forging mine."
Silence.
Rebecca stood.
She explained the anti-fraud provision.
The trustees voted.
Derek's authority was suspended immediately.
His face turned red.
"This is ridiculous."
I looked at Vane.
"You've been quiet."
He smiled.
"I prefer observing."
"I noticed."
Derek slammed his hand on the table.
"You can't do this!"
Emily stood.
"Actually, we just did."
He stared at his wife.
Something ugly appeared in his eyes.
"You'll regret this."
I stood.
"Careful."
He pointed at me.
"You think because you wore a uniform somewhere, you can walk in here and control everybody?"
Vane suddenly whispered—
"Derek."
But Derek kept going.
"You're nobody here."
The boardroom doors opened.
Colonel Marcus Reed stepped inside.
Behind him were two uniformed officers.
Marcus walked directly toward me.
Stopped.
Then saluted.
"General Harrington."
Derek's face went blank.
I returned the salute.
Then looked at my brother-in-law.
May you like
For the first time since I'd come home—
Derek looked afraid.
