Chapter 4 - My Sister Finally Told Me Everything

Derek left twenty minutes later.

He claimed he had a meeting.

I let him go.

Sometimes the fastest way to expose a liar is to let him believe he's still ahead.

Emily and I stayed in the kitchen.

"How long has he treated you like this?"

She didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

"Emily."

"Two years."

My jaw tightened.

"It wasn't like this at first."

"It never is."

"He started controlling the accounts."

She wiped her eyes.

"Then my phone."

I said nothing.

"Then where I went."

Her voice became smaller.

"Who I saw."

"Did he ever hurt you?"

She looked away.

I already knew.

"How many times?"

"Daniel..."

"How many?"

"Enough."

I closed my eyes for one second.

In my career, I had learned that anger could be useful.

Uncontrolled anger wasn't.

So I controlled it.

"You're not staying with him."

"I can't just leave."

"Why?"

"He controls everything."

"Not anymore."

"You don't understand."

She grabbed my wrist.

"He has people inside Dad's company."

"Who?"

"I don't know all of them."

"Then we'll find them."

She shook her head.

"You think this is just Derek."

"It isn't."

"No."

She pointed at the flash drive.

"Listen to recording seventeen."

I opened it.

Derek's voice filled the kitchen.

"If Thomas dies before the restructuring is complete, we need Emily's proxy."

Another man responded.

"And Daniel?"

Derek laughed.

"Daniel isn't coming home."

I stopped breathing.

Then Charles Vane's voice came through clearly.

"Don't underestimate him."

Derek answered.

"He's a soldier."

Vane corrected him.

"No. He's much more than that."

The recording ended.

Emily stared at me.

"They've been talking about you for months."

My phone rang again.

This time it was my mother.

I answered immediately.

"Mom?"

Her voice was shaking.

"Daniel, something happened."

"What?"

"Your father collapsed."

I stood.

"Where are you?"

"St. Catherine's."

"I'm coming."

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"Daniel..."

May you like

"Yes?"

"Before he collapsed, your father discovered someone had emptied one of the family trusts."
