Chapter 8 - The First Thing Richard Admitted

That one word changed everything between us.

Not because it fixed anything.

Because it was the first time Richard said something that cost him.

"Yes."

He had fired me because I made him look.

I thought I would feel victorious.

Instead I felt tired.

Erica left to speak with her legal team.

Dana was coordinating with authorities.

Richard and I were alone for three minutes.

"Why didn't you just tell me to stop asking?" I said.

He almost smiled.

"I did."

"Fair."

He looked toward the conference-room glass.

"When my father ran Harrison, he knew every driver by name. Every customer. Every lane."

"And?"

"I spent twenty years trying to prove I could make it bigger."

"You did."

"I also made it so big that I stopped knowing what I was signing."

I thought of my salvage reconciliations.

"You're not the only one."

He looked at me.

I explained my own signatures.

The cover sheets.

The missing attachments I did not demand.

Richard shook his head.

"That is not the same."

"No. But it's mine."

He stared at the table.

"Trevor used that about you."

"What?"

"He said you were so eager to be useful that you'd sign anything routine if I put it in front of you."

That hurt because it contained truth.

I had wanted to be indispensable.

I had confused being needed with being respected.

Then Jasmine Ortiz appeared outside the conference room.

The coworker who had said nothing while I walked out.

She was crying.

"Emily, can I talk to you?"

Richard stood.

"If this is about work—"

"It's about Trevor."

Richard stopped.

Jasmine handed me her phone.

Messages.

Three weeks earlier.

TREVOR: Need Emily's verification phrase for Northstar. She changes it too often.

JASMINE: Ask Emily.

TREVOR: She slows everything down. Just send it.

Jasmine had sent him the phrase.

My stomach dropped.

"Why?"

She cried harder.

"He said it was for an executive continuity file."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I thought you'd get mad."

"I would have."

"I know."

Then she showed another message.

Sent this morning, seven minutes before I was fired.

TREVOR: Need your spare admin badge. Richard wants Emily locked out immediately.

Jasmine had given it to him.

"That badge can clone temporary floor access," she whispered.

I stared.

She had helped Trevor copy my access.

Not because she hated me.

Because she wanted to avoid conflict.

Because Trevor had authority.

Because office harm rarely needs everyone to be evil.

Sometimes it only needs enough people to say yes quietly.

Then Jasmine showed me the last message Trevor sent after I left.

If anyone asks, Emily gave me everything before she threatened Richard.
