Chapter 19 - The Execution Protocol—The Fall of the Chopper

Chloe stared at the oxygen canister, her cold composure finally shattering.
“You’re bluffing,” she hissed, her hands trembling on the revolver. “You’re a civilian, Emily. You don't have the guts to kamikaze a helicopter.”
“I was a civilian three days ago,” I said, clicking the hammer of the 9mm back with my thumb. “Then I watched Arthur Harrison murder a kid on the highway. I watched Julian Rossi try to nerve-gas me. I watched my own father fake an illness to build a trafficking empire. I have nothing left to lose, Chloe. Do you?”
For ten agonizing seconds, the only sound was the deafening roar of the chopper blades.
Chloe looked at the absolute conviction in my eyes. She knew I wasn't bluffing. I was entirely ready to die if it meant taking the cartel’s future down with me.
Chloe slowly lowered her revolver, placing it on the passenger seat.
“Fine,” Chloe spat, raising her hands. “You win. Keep the money. Just put the gun away.”
“Turn the chopper around,” I ordered.
“What?”
“Turn it around. Set it down in the clearing near the border checkpoint. The authorities are waiting.”
Chloe scoffed, turning back to the controls. “You’re actually going to turn your own sister into the police? You’re going to let me rot in a federal cell next to Dad?”
She grabbed the cyclic control stick, banking the helicopter hard to the left.
But it wasn't a maneuver to turn around.
Chloe violently threw the chopper into a steep, terrifying nosedive. The sudden drop in gravity sent the oxygen canister flying out of my hands, tumbling into the back cargo hold.
“If I’m going to prison, you’re coming with me!” Chloe screamed, grabbing her revolver from the seat and turning to fire.
The cabin was spinning out of control. Alarms were shrieking on the dashboard.
I didn't dive for the gun. I dove for the side door.
I grabbed the heavy metal handle, yanked it downward, and kicked the side door open. The freezing night air violently sucked into the cabin.
Chloe fired wildly, a bullet shattering the window inches from my head.
I didn't hesitate. I grabbed the emergency parachute mounted on the bulkhead wall, strapped it across my chest with one hand, and threw myself backward out of the plummeting helicopter.
The wind tore the breath from my lungs as I free-fell into the pitch-black sky.
Above me, Chloe realized too late that she had locked the cyclic stick into an unrecoverable dive. The Eurocopter spiraled violently downward, disappearing into the dark canopy of the pine forest below.
Ten seconds later, a massive fireball erupted from the trees, illuminating the snow-covered mountains in a flash of brilliant orange light.
I pulled the rip-cord. The parachute jerked me violently upward, slowing my descent as I drifted silently into the freezing wilderness, watching the fiery end of the Carter family empire.
