Chapter 4 - THE WRONG BETRAYAL
Claire slept for forty minutes.
At six, she entered Whitmore Meridian headquarters through the employee entrance.
No press.
No driver.
No Daniel.
The board portal logs pointed to a backup credential created eighteen months earlier.
The credential belonged to Claire’s late mother.
Eleanor had been dead for six years.
“That’s impossible,” Claire said.
The head of IT looked miserable.
“It was never deleted.”
“Who had access?”
“Originally? Your mother, you, and the corporate secretary.”
The corporate secretary was Martin Vale.
He had served the Whitmore family for thirty-one years.
He had also directed the movers the previous afternoon.
Claire remembered the clipboard.
Not Martin.
A different man.
She had assumed he was a mover.
She pulled security footage.
The man beneath the chandelier had never arrived with the moving company.
He entered through the service door twelve minutes before them.
He left while Claire argued with Daniel.
Nobody stopped him.
Claire zoomed in.
Ruth recognized him.
“Elias Voss.”
“Who?”
“A corporate fixer. Proxy fights. hostile restructurings. Quiet ones.”
“Who hired him?”
Ruth looked at Claire.
“That’s what we need to find out.”
Daniel arrived.
He looked exhausted.
“I didn’t hire Voss.”
“Did Sabrina?”
“No.”
“You seem very sure.”
Daniel hesitated.
“She was scared of him.”
Claire stared.
“You knew she knew him?”
“She told me two weeks ago.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I thought it was foundation politics.”
Claire laughed without humor.
“You were sleeping with my best friend and somehow still managed not to know what she was doing.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“At least she talked to me.”
The sentence landed.
Claire hated that it did.
Then Ruth’s phone rang.
She listened.
Her expression changed.
“The trust office was broken into last night.”
Claire stood.
“Anything taken?”
“One thing.”
“What?”
“Eleanor Whitmore’s original trust amendment.”
