Chapter 2 - THE SIGNATURE
Claire’s attorney, Ruth Mercer, arrived before dinner.
She did not hug Claire.
Ruth never wasted comfort before facts.
“House?”
“Mine through the Eleanor Whitmore Family Trust.”
“Company?”
“Whitmore Meridian voting shares are held by the trust. I’m controlling trustee.”
“Daniel’s position?”
“Chief strategy officer. Employment contract. No equity except unvested incentive units.”
“Sabrina?”
“Foundation communications director.”
Ruth stopped writing.
“Both employed by entities you control?”
“Yes.”
“That is either convenient or catastrophic.”
“Probably both.”
Daniel demanded a private conversation.
Claire agreed.
He entered the library with the posture of a man expecting negotiation.
“I love Sabrina.”
Claire nodded.
He seemed offended by how little she reacted.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.”
“How did you want me to find out?”
Silence.
“After you signed the Zurich restructuring?”
Claire looked up.
Daniel blinked.
There it was.
A mistake.
A real one.
“What restructuring?”
“Nothing.”
“Daniel.”
He rubbed his jaw.
“An internal governance update.”
“I didn’t authorize one.”
“It was routine.”
Claire called Ruth back into the room.
Daniel swore.
Ruth asked one question.
“Who prepared the documents?”
Daniel said nothing.
Sabrina appeared at the doorway.
“I did.”
Claire stared at her.
Sabrina lifted her chin.
“You were going to sign them in Zurich. Your office already had the packet.”
Claire’s grief hardened into attention.
The affair hurt.
But this was different.
Someone had expected her signature on documents she had never approved.
Ruth opened her laptop.
“Claire, do not sign anything tonight.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
Ruth’s eyes stayed on Sabrina.
“I mean anything.”
Then Claire’s phone buzzed.
An email from her executive assistant.
URGENT: Zurich closing packet appears to contain an amended voting proxy.
Claire opened the attachment.
At the bottom was a signature.
Her signature.
