CHAPTER 2
I looked back at my phone.
Last Seen: Now
Activity: Standing in front of me, staring
My hands started shaking. I typed: This isn’t funny.
Sarah: Why are you acting so weird? You’re scaring me. Come sit down.
I turned on every light in the apartment. Still nothing. I even checked the closet and under the bed like an idiot. The place was empty.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Sarah: You’re starting to freak me out. Stop looking at me like that.
I stared at the screen, heart hammering. That’s when I noticed something in the app I hadn’t seen before.
There was a second status line under her name.
You: Last Seen: Now
Location: Standing in front of her
I slowly raised my eyes from the phone.
The couch wasn’t empty anymore.
Sarah was sitting there, smiling at me the same way she always did. Except her eyes were wrong — too wide, too still. Like a photo someone had pasted onto a person.
She patted the cushion next to her.
“Come sit, babe,” she whispered. “I’ve been waiting for you to finally see me.”
I looked down at the phone one last time.
