I downloaded the app because my girlfriend had been ignoring my texts for two days.

It was called “Echo” — some new social app that promised to show you the “real last seen status” of anyone, even if they turned off read receipts. Everyone on TikTok was talking about it. “It’s scary accurate,” they said.

I installed it, logged in with my number, and immediately searched for Sarah.

Her status popped up instantly.

Location: Our apartment
Activity: Sitting on the couch

My stomach dropped. I was standing in the doorway of our apartment right now, and the living room was completely dark and empty. I’d been alone since yesterday morning.

I typed a message in the normal chat: Sarah where are you?

The Echo app immediately showed her typing bubbles.

Then a reply came through:

May you like

Sarah: I’m right here, babe. On the couch. Why are you standing at the door like that?

I froze. The apartment was silent except for the low hum of the refrigerator. I slowly walked into the living room. Nothing. Just the dark couch.
