INHERITANCE OF DUST / Chapter 15 / 15

CHAPTER 15: THE FUTURE

Six months later, the house was mine again. Fully. Completely.

I'd sold the business, but not to Daniel. To a couple of young entrepreneurs who had big dreams and bigger hearts. Robert would have approved.

I'd donated most of the money to charities. I'd kept enough for a comfortable retirement, but not so much that it would tempt anyone.

And I'd mended the fences I could with my grandchildren.

Daniel and Ashley were out of my life. For good.

But Noah and his sister, Eliza, were in my life every weekend. We baked cookies. We watched movies. We talked about everything and nothing.

One afternoon, I was sitting on the porch with Noah, just watching the sunset, when he turned to me and said:

"Grandma? Do you think my dad will ever be okay?"

I thought about it. Thought about Daniel and his ambition, his selfishness, his blindness.

"I don't know," I said. "But I think that's up to him. Not me. Not you."

Noah nodded slowly.

"He messed up," he said. "Pretty bad."

"He did," I agreed. "But that doesn't mean you will."

"How do you know?"

I looked at him, this beautiful child who'd been born into a broken family, who'd been caught in a battle he didn't understand.

"Because you're asking the right questions," I said. "That's the first step."

Noah smiled.

And I smiled back.

I'd lost a lot in the past year. A husband. Two children. A lifetime of hope.

But I'd gained something too.

I'd gained myself.
