CHAPTER 11: THE STRATEGY

The next morning, I woke up in Mary's guest room with a plan.

We drove to the courthouse and filed a motion to enforce the trust. Then we went to the police and filed a report for breaking and entering. By noon, Daniel and Ashley were being served with papers.

By 3 p.m., they were back at the house, packing their things. I watched from the street as they loaded their new furniture into a moving truck.

"This isn't over," Daniel said as he walked past me.

"It's over," I said. "You just don't know it yet."

I turned and walked back to Mary's car. She was waiting, her eyes bright.

"Where to next?" she asked.

"The bank," I said. "I want to see the real accounts."

We went to the bank, and for the first time, I saw the full picture. Robert hadn't been losing money. He'd been saving it. Hiding it. Building a future for me that my children could never touch.

Three point two million dollars in accounts they couldn't access.

That was the truth.

Everything else—the debt, the lies, the threats—it was just noise.

"Now what?" Mary asked.

May you like

I looked at her and smiled.

"Now, we have some fun."
