Chapter 2: The Trap They Walked Into

Three months earlier...

When my husband begged me to sign new financial documents...

He said chemotherapy had left him unable to focus.

"I trust you."

He smiled.

"So just sign with me."

I did.

Or at least...

That's what he believed.

Because I never signed anything without my attorney reviewing it first.

Every transfer agreement contained a hidden provision.

If my husband attempted to gain ownership through fraud...

Every asset automatically transferred into an irrevocable charitable trust.

He never noticed.

He never read.

He just signed.

The same way he'd signed every document for the last ten years.

Because he believed I would never protect myself against him.

Big mistake.

Back in the hospital...

I waited.

Listened.

Recorded.

Every visit.

Every confession.

Every laugh.

The nurse helping them...

Was helping me instead.

She had recognized my husband weeks earlier.

He wasn't only visiting his wife.

He'd been bringing the same woman into oncology for months.

Hospital cameras captured everything.

The kisses.

The conversations.

Even the moment he asked about life insurance payouts.

Five days later...

I opened my eyes.

Right as he walked into my room holding flowers.

He smiled.

"My love..."

I smiled back.

The weakest smile I could manage.

Then whispered...

"I heard everything."

His face lost every color.

The flowers slipped from his hand.

The vase shattered.

Before he could speak...

Two detectives entered the room.

Followed by my attorney.

Followed by the chairman of our company.

My attorney placed one folder on my hospital bed.

"Mrs. Prescott..."

She smiled.

"Congratulations."

My husband frowned.

"For what?"

She looked directly at him.

"For becoming completely broke."

The chairman projected the ownership records.

The company...

Gone.

The vacation homes...

Gone.

The investment portfolio...

Gone.

The charitable trust now legally owned everything.

Not him.

Not me.

Neither of us.

His mistress screamed.

"You tricked us!"

My attorney calmly answered.

May you like

"No."

"You tricked yourselves."
