CHAPTER 8: The Witness Nobody Knew Existed

The room fell into absolute silence.
Victor Dawson slowly turned toward Emma.
For the first time since he stepped into the cabin...
He looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
The little girl stood trembling behind the stone fireplace, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"I remember," she whispered.
"I remember everything."
Sarah's face drained of color.
"Emma..."
"No," Emma said, shaking her head.
"I have to tell him."
She looked straight at me.
"Olivia told me one day I'd have to."
My heart tightened.
"What did you see, sweetheart?"
Emma took a shaky breath.
"The rain."
"The road."
"The black car."
Victor's jaw clenched.
"It was nighttime," Emma continued.
"We were hiding in the woods."
"Mom said we couldn't make any noise."
"I heard a lady yelling."
She pointed at Victor.
"He was yelling too."
My hands slowly curled into fists.
Emma squeezed Ella's hand before continuing.
"The lady ran."
"She tried to get back into her car."
Victor suddenly raised his voice.
"That's enough."
Henry stepped between him and the girls.
"No."
"You've been talking for three years."
"It's her turn."
Emma closed her eyes.
"I saw him push the car."
The room seemed to stop breathing.
"He used another truck."
"He pushed it."
"The car went over the cliff."
Her voice broke.
"And then..."
"Olivia looked at us."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"She smiled."
"She told us to run."
I couldn't move.
Every official report.
Every police conclusion.
Every sleepless night blaming fate.
A lie.
Olivia hadn't lost control of her car.
She had been murdered.
Victor slowly began clapping.
One...
Slow...
Mocking clap at a time.
When he finished, he smiled again.
"A touching story."
He looked around the cabin.
"But she's seven."
"What jury believes the memory of a frightened child?"
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew...
He had a point.
Without evidence...
Emma's testimony might never be enough.
Victor extended his hand again.
"The flash drive."
"Now."
His men raised their rifles.
Henry quietly lowered his own.
There were too many of them.
Sarah wrapped both arms around the twins.
I looked at Olivia's sealed flash drive in my hand.
Then at Emma.
Then at Victor.
I already knew what Olivia would have done.
I slowly stepped forward.
Victor smiled.
"I knew you'd make the intelligent choice."
I reached him.
Close enough to see the tiny scar beneath his left eye.
Close enough to smell expensive cologne.
I held out the flash drive.
Victor reached for it.
At the last second—
I pulled my hand back.
And threw the flash drive into the blazing fireplace.
Victor's smile vanished.
"No!"
He lunged toward the flames.
Chaos exploded.
Henry tackled one of Victor's gunmen.
Sarah pulled the twins toward the back door.
Another man fired.
The bullet shattered a window.
Glass rained across the cabin.
I grabbed the heavy cast-iron poker beside the fireplace and swung it with everything I had.
Victor stumbled backward.
The flash drive disappeared beneath burning logs.
Plastic melted.
Smoke rose.
Victor screamed in rage.
"You idiot!"
I looked him straight in the eyes.
"You killed my wife for that."
"I'd rather destroy it than let you have it."
Victor laughed.
Even now.
Even with his evidence burning.
"You think that was the only copy?"
My stomach dropped.
"No."
He smiled again.
"Olivia was smarter than that."
He leaned closer.
"So was I."
Before I could react—
The unmistakable sound of helicopter blades echoed across the valley.
Everyone froze.
Even Victor.
A second later...
Another helicopter.
Then another.
Black SUVs outside suddenly began speeding away from the cabin.
One of Victor's men shouted,
"Sir!"
"We've got company!"
Victor's expression changed instantly.
He looked...
Worried.
Henry smiled for the first time.
"They're here."
I frowned.
"Who?"
He nodded toward the sky.
"The people Olivia trusted."
The cabin door burst open.
Not Victor's men this time.
Men and women wearing dark tactical gear flooded inside.
"Federal agents!"
"Drop your weapons!"
The room erupted into confusion.
Victor's gunmen fired first.
Agents returned fire.
Sarah threw herself over Emma and Ella.
Henry dragged me behind the stone chimney.
Bullets tore through the cabin walls.
In the middle of the gunfire...
Victor didn't run.
He came straight for me.
He slammed me against the wall.
His fingers wrapped around my throat.
"You should've stayed in the city, Ethan."
His grip tightened.
"You never knew your wife."
I struggled for air.
"You're wrong."
Victor leaned closer.
"No."
"You only knew the part she wanted you to see."
A deafening gunshot echoed through the room.
Victor suddenly froze.
His eyes widened.
Then he slowly looked down.
A dark red stain spread across his expensive gray suit.
He turned.
Standing near the doorway...
Holding a service pistol with perfectly steady hands...
Was a woman wearing an FBI windbreaker.
She never lowered the weapon.
Instead, she said calmly,
"Victor Dawson."
"You're under arrest for kidnapping, human trafficking, conspiracy to commit murder..."
She paused.
"...and the murder of Olivia Brooks."
Victor stared at her in disbelief.
"You..."
The agent nodded once.
"Yes."
"We finally found Olivia's last witness."
She looked at Emma.
Then back at Victor.
"And she wasn't the only one."
Before anyone could speak again...
Another agent rushed inside carrying a sealed evidence case.
"We found a second cache."
He looked directly at me.
"It was hidden beneath Olivia Brooks' cottage."
My heart skipped.
Inside the evidence case...
Was another flash drive.
And taped to it...
A handwritten note.
In Olivia's unmistakable handwriting.
Ethan... I knew Victor would find the first one. So I made a second. Trust the Shepherd.
The FBI agent looked at me with quiet admiration.
"Your wife didn't leave him one backup."
She smiled.
May you like
"She left him a trap."
