CHAPTER 7: The Truth About Olivia's Death

Victor Dawson didn't look like a monster.
That was the most unsettling part.
He looked like the kind of man whose face belonged on the cover of a business magazine.
Perfect gray suit.
Silver hair neatly combed back.
Expensive leather gloves.
A warm smile that never reached his eyes.
The kind of man people trusted before they realized they shouldn't.
He stood beside the black SUV, calmly straightening his cufflinks as if he had arrived for a dinner party instead of a manhunt.
Six armed men spread out behind him.
No one rushed.
No one shouted.
They already believed they had won.
Henry quietly closed the cabin curtains.
"They'll surround the place first."
He glanced toward the back door.
"Victor never takes unnecessary risks."
Sarah instinctively wrapped both arms around Emma and Ella.
The twins were trembling.
"Mom..."
Emma whispered.
"Is he Dad?"
Sarah slowly nodded.
Neither girl cried.
Instead...
They lowered their heads, as if they had expected this moment their entire lives.
Outside, Victor called again.
"Sarah."
His voice was almost gentle.
"You've made this much harder than it needed to be."
A long silence.
Then—
"The girls belong with their father."
Ella buried her face in Sarah's shoulder.
"No..."
Sarah whispered.
"You don't own them."
Victor smiled.
"Oh, Sarah."
"I own everything."
Henry looked at me.
"Ethan."
"Read Olivia's letter."
"Now."
My hands shook as I unfolded the pages.
The paper smelled faintly of cedar and lavender.
Just like Olivia.
The first lines blurred through my tears.
My dearest Ethan,
If this letter has reached you, then someone has finally forced your hand. I'm sorry. I wanted to carry this burden alone.
I swallowed hard and kept reading.
Victor Dawson isn't just a violent husband. He's the head of a trafficking network that moves women and children across three states using construction companies as cover.
My blood ran cold.
Construction companies.
Victor's mountain developments.
Everything suddenly fit together.
The next paragraph made my knees weaken.
Sarah wasn't the first woman I helped.
She was the seventh.
Seventh.
Olivia had secretly rescued six other families before Sarah.
Without telling me.
Without taking credit.
Without asking for anything in return.
That was exactly who she was.
Henry quietly said,
"She started helping victims almost eight years ago."
I stared at him.
"You knew?"
"I helped build the shelters."
"How many?"
He hesitated.
"Five."
Five hidden shelters scattered throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains.
My wife had spent years creating an underground escape network...
And I had never seen it.
I turned another page.
Then everything stopped.
The final entry wasn't addressed to me.
It was addressed to Emma and Ella.
If you're old enough to read this one day...
Never believe that you were abandoned.
Your mother fought for you until she couldn't fight anymore.
And if Ethan is beside you...
Trust him the way I trusted him.
My vision blurred.
Olivia had written to children she knew she might never see again.
Suddenly—
BANG!
The front door shook violently.
Victor's men had rammed it.
Henry remained perfectly calm.
"They're testing the hinges."
Another crash echoed through the cabin.
This time louder.
Splinters flew across the room.
Sarah pulled the twins behind the heavy stone fireplace.
Victor's voice drifted inside.
"Ethan Brooks."
I froze.
How did he know I was here?
"I know you're reading Olivia's letter."
My heart nearly stopped.
Victor continued,
"She was always sentimental."
The smile disappeared from Henry's face.
"Don't answer him."
But Victor wasn't finished.
"Did she ever tell you..."
"...who pushed her car off that mountain road?"
Silence exploded inside the cabin.
I couldn't breathe.
No.
No.
No.
Olivia...
The accident...
Victor laughed softly.
"I'll save you the trouble."
"It wasn't an accident."
Rage flooded through me.
I stepped toward the broken door before Henry grabbed my arm.
"No!"
"That's what he wants."
But Victor had already planted the poison.
He spoke louder.
"She begged."
Sarah closed her eyes.
Henry lowered his head.
Victor continued in the same calm voice.
"She offered herself..."
"...if I'd leave Sarah and the girls alone."
Emma looked up.
"What does that mean?"
No one answered.
Victor answered for us.
"It means..."
"Your Olivia died because she chose strangers over herself."
The cabin fell silent.
I could barely hear my own heartbeat.
Then Henry whispered,
"He's lying."
Victor laughed again.
"Am I?"
Henry looked me straight in the eyes.
"Olivia never begged."
A long pause.
"She fought."
He opened another drawer beneath the old desk.
Inside was a battered digital camera.
He handed it to me.
"I couldn't bring myself to watch it again."
I turned it on.
The battery still had one bar.
A shaky video appeared.
The date stamp read...
Three days before Olivia died.
The image showed Olivia standing outside this very cabin.
She was speaking directly into the camera.
"If anything happens to me..."
She smiled sadly.
"...Victor finally knows who I am."
My heart shattered.
Then Olivia looked directly into the lens.
"Ethan..."
"I'm sorry I had to lie to you."
"I loved you enough..."
"...to let you hate me if it meant you'd stay alive."
Tears rolled freely down my face.
The recording continued.
"I'm leaving every piece of evidence on the flash drive."
"Victor will come after it."
"So if you're watching this..."
"...don't try to avenge me."
"Finish what I started."
The video suddenly cut to static.
Someone had interrupted the recording.
At that exact moment—
CRASH!
The front door exploded inward.
Armed men flooded into the cabin.
Henry fired one warning shot into the ceiling.
Everyone froze.
Victor slowly stepped through the doorway.
Still smiling.
His eyes landed on the flash drive in my hand.
"There it is."
He extended one gloved hand.
"Give me Olivia's legacy..."
"...and I'll let the children live."
Before I could answer—
Emma suddenly shouted from behind the fireplace.
"No!"
Everyone turned toward her.
The little girl was pointing at Victor with trembling hands.
Then she screamed the words that froze the entire room.
"He's lying!"
"I saw him!"
"I saw him push the car!"
The smile disappeared from Victor Dawson's face...
May you like
For the very first time.
