Chapter 19 - Gate 42 Again

Three years after the airport, I found myself at O’Hare again.

Same terminal.

Different trip.

I was flying to Seattle for a conference.

Then I saw Gate 42.

I stopped.

The balcony was still there.

Travelers rushed below.

A couple kissed near the boarding area.

For one second, my body remembered before my mind did.

Tight chest.

Cold fingers.

The sound disappearing.

Then it passed.

I walked downstairs.

Bought coffee.

Sat near the exact place where Daniel had stood.

Nothing happened.

That was the point.

Places do not own memories forever.

I texted Emma a photograph of the gate.

She replied:

Want me to come fight it?

I wrote:

I think I won.

She answered:

By sitting there?

Exactly.

Then another message arrived.

From Daniel.

Coincidence.

Emma says you’re at O’Hare. Safe travels.

Three years earlier, his name on my phone sharpened my pain.

Now it was simply a message.

I replied:

Thanks.

That was all.

No heartbeat spike.

No need to prove anything.

Freedom can look very boring from the outside.
