Chapter 16 - The Letter Daniel Gave Me

I opened Daniel’s letter fourteen months after the divorce.

Not because I missed him.

Because I found it while cleaning a drawer.

It began:

Rachel,

The worst thing I did was not falling in love with someone else.

I stopped.

Then continued.

The worst thing was deciding I had the right to manage your reality while I figured out mine.

That sentence was honest.

He admitted the affair began emotionally before physically.

He admitted he enjoyed Olivia’s admiration during a period when he felt criticized at home.

He admitted he never told me he felt unhappy because he feared I would ask him to explain what he wanted.

And he did not know.

So instead of facing uncertainty, he built a second life.

Then:

When you saw me at O’Hare, I was still planning to return from Maui and ask you to sign the refinance before filing for divorce.

I closed my eyes.

He did not soften it.

Good.

I had convinced myself I would repay everything.

That because you were financially secure, using the lake house temporarily would not truly hurt you.

That logic disgusts me now.

Then:

I told everyone a version of you that made my behavior easier to defend.

That was another betrayal.

Finally:

I do not expect forgiveness.

I hope someday the twelve years before the affair become memories you are allowed to keep without feeling foolish.

That sentence broke me.

Because that had been one of the hardest parts.

Were all twelve years fake?

No.

Some were real.

Some were beautiful.

Daniel’s final betrayal did not get to retroactively steal every good day.

I cried for an hour.

Then folded the letter.

May you like

Not because I wanted him back.

Because I finally stopped needing the past to be either perfect or worthless.
