Chapter 9 - The Company They Were About to Steal

Mark had spent nineteen years building Nolan Mechanical.
He started with one van.
One helper.
A toolbox inherited from his father.
Now the company employed forty-three people.
It was the only thing he owned that felt entirely earned.
And apparently somebody planned to move $1.8 million out of it on Saturday.
His controller, Sam Ortega, met them at the office before dawn.
Sam logged into the company’s treasury portal.
“There’s no transfer scheduled.”
Ruiz said, “Check pending vendor authorizations.”
Sam did.
Then he stopped.
“What?” Mark asked.
“There’s a vendor ownership update.”
Company: VRS Facility Holdings.
Victor Raymond Shaw.
Effective Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
The update redirected all receivables from the city kitchen contract to a new account.
Projected value over eighteen months: $1.8 million.
Mark stared at his electronic signature.
“I didn’t approve this.”
Sam looked sick.
“It was approved from your admin token.”
Mark remembered Diane insisting she organize his office during the months after Lucy vanished.
He had been exhausted.
Grieving.
Trying to help Jack sleep.
Diane brought meals.
Answered calls.
Handled paperwork.
He had called it love.
Lucy called it access.
Sam froze the transfer request and contacted the bank.
Ruiz called federal investigators because city funds were involved.
By sunrise, the corruption case had expanded beyond Pike.
Two city employees were placed on administrative leave.
A procurement officer stopped answering his phone.
Victor Shaw was nowhere to be found.
Mark sat in his office with Lucy.
She looked around.
“My old desk is gone.”
“Diane said it upset Jack.”
Lucy gave him a tired look.
“Did everything she removed supposedly upset Jack?”
Mark swallowed.
“Most things.”
“You believed her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He thought about lying.
Then stopped.
“Because believing you left was easier than believing I failed to find you.”
Lucy’s expression changed.
That was the first honest answer he had given her.
“I hated you,” he said.
“I know.”
“I told Jack you made a choice.”
“I know.”
“I married the person who helped take you.”
Lucy looked down.
“That part is going to take me longer.”
Mark nodded.
“It should.”
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Victor Shaw’s voice came through.
“You froze the transfer.”
Mark stood.
“Where are you?”
“You really think this ends with Diane in handcuffs?”
“It ends with you there too.”
Victor laughed.
“No. It ends with your son learning what his mother did before we ever touched her.”
Mark’s grip tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
“Ask Lucy about the first ledger.”
Then he hung up.
Mark slowly turned toward her.
Lucy had gone completely still.
