Chapter 7 - The Box With His Name

By 8:30 a.m., police had a warrant for the Nolan house.

Mark waited outside with Jack and Lucy while Internal Affairs searched.

It was the first time Lucy had seen the house in seven months.

The porch had new planters.

Diane’s wreath hung on the door.

Lucy stared at it.

“She moved in?”

Mark’s shame came hot and immediate.

“Two months after you disappeared.”

“And you married her three months after that.”

He did not defend himself.

Jack said, “I told him it was too fast.”

Mark looked at his son.

“I know.”

Lucy closed her eyes.

There would be time for that later.

If they got one.

Ruiz came out carrying a sealed evidence bag.

“We found the attic box.”

Jack stood.

“And?”

“Empty except for school papers.”

Mark swore quietly.

Then another investigator emerged from the garage.

“You need to see this.”

Behind a cabinet, police had found a wall safe Mark did not know existed.

Inside were cash bundles, six prepaid phones, copies of city inspection reports, and photographs.

Hundreds of photographs.

Lucy entering the grocery store.

Lucy picking Jack up from school.

Lucy meeting a lawyer.

Lucy at a bank.

The surveillance began nearly a year before she disappeared.

Jack stared at the pictures.

“She was watching Mom?”

Ruiz said, “Somebody was.”

Mark picked up one photo.

Lucy sat at a coffee shop across from a gray-haired man.

“Who is that?”

“Keller,” Lucy said.

On the back was a handwritten note.

CONTACT CONFIRMED. MOVE BEFORE AUDIT.

Mark felt sick.

“They planned your disappearance.”

Lucy nodded.

“Probably for weeks.”

Ruiz opened one of the prepaid phones.

Most messages had been deleted.

But one device contained a recent voicemail.

From Diane.

Ruiz played it.

Victor, the boy broke the freezer lock. Pike is here. If this goes bad, move the box tonight. Use Keller’s old place.

Mark looked at Ruiz.

“Keller’s old place?”

Lucy’s face went white.

“His cabin.”

“Where?”

“North of Concord. He took me there once after he decided to help. He said he kept duplicates there because he didn’t trust the clinic.”

Ruiz was already calling New Hampshire authorities.

Jack said, “The box is there.”

“Maybe,” Ruiz replied.

Lucy looked at the clock.

“If Victor got Diane’s message before she was arrested, he had all night.”

Mark asked, “How far is the cabin?”

“Two hours.”

Ruiz’s phone rang.

She listened.

Then her eyes sharpened.

“What?” Mark asked.

Ruiz hung up.

“State police just reached Keller’s cabin.”

“And?”

“It’s burning.”
