CHAPTER 4: THE LAST LETTER

Six months later, Melissa received a letter from prison.
She almost threw it away.
Instead, she opened it.
The letter was short.
"Melissa,
Everything they told you is true.
My name was never Jason.
I lied about who I was.
I lied about where I came from.
But I never lied about loving you.
The money wasn't stolen from you.
The life wasn't stolen from you.
You were the one good thing I found while hiding from my past.
Ironically, after all these years, it wasn't the FBI that found me.
It was a dead rat.
If that rat hadn't crawled into the mattress, my secret might have stayed hidden forever.
I guess life has a strange sense of humor.
I'm sorry.
For all of it.
— Daniel"
Melissa sat quietly for a long time.
Then she folded the letter and placed it in a drawer.
She never visited him.
Never wrote back.
But she never forgot him either.
Because sometimes the person who breaks your heart is also the person who once made you happiest.
And sometimes...
