CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO NEVER EXISTED

The agents arrived the next morning.
Within minutes, their expressions changed.
One investigator pulled Melissa aside.
"Mrs. Carter, I need you to stay calm."
Her heart pounded.
"What is it?"
The agent slid a photograph across the table.
Melissa froze.
The man in the picture was Jason.
Except his name wasn't Jason.
It was Daniel Mercer.
And according to federal records, Daniel had vanished eleven years earlier during an investigation involving financial fraud and money laundering.
"Your husband has been living under a false identity."
Melissa felt the room spin.
Nothing made sense anymore.
The wedding photos.
The vacations.
The promises.
Were any of them real?
The agent sighed.
"We've been looking for him for years."
Two days later, Jason returned home.
Only to find six federal vehicles parked outside.
The moment he saw them, he knew.
It was over.
He didn't run.
He didn't fight.
He simply looked toward the house.
Toward the window where Melissa stood watching.
Then he quietly held out his wrists.
As agents placed him in handcuffs, Melissa noticed something unexpected.
He looked relieved.
