Chapter 3 — Everything Falls Apart

Bryce grabbed my arm.

"June."

"Please."

"You know I never meant..."

I calmly pulled my arm away.

"Never meant to steal from me?"

Vanessa suddenly pointed at Bryce.

"This was your idea!"

Bryce spun around.

"No!"

"You said she'd never find out!"

The entire wedding exploded into shouting.

Guests whispered.

Phones recorded everything.

One investor quietly said,

"Cancel the partnership."

Another shook his head.

"We don't do business with fraud."

Bryce looked around desperately.

"Listen!"

"This is all a misunderstanding!"

The attorney smiled politely.

"No."

"It is a felony."

Then two Texas Rangers walked through the gates.

Several deputies followed behind them.

Bryce froze.

Vanessa whispered,

"You called them?"

I looked at her.

"No."

"The attorney did."

One ranger walked directly to Bryce.

"Mr. Harper?"

Bryce swallowed.

"Yes?"

"We have a warrant to question you regarding suspected fraud, attempted theft of mineral rights, and filing false legal documents."

Vanessa quietly stepped away from him.

"I barely know him."

Bryce stared at her in disbelief.

"You said we were partners."

May you like

She didn't answer.

Because she was already looking for someone richer to stand beside.
