Chapter 3
King Adrian rode confidently toward the Northern capital.
He expected victory.
Instead, the city gates opened.
A royal procession emerged.
And sitting upon the imperial throne carried by dozens of servants was Elena.
Adrian nearly fell from his horse.
"Elena?"
She wore the golden crown of the Northern Empire.
The woman he had condemned to death was now Empress.
Adrian dismounted immediately.
"I thought you were dead."
"You made sure of that," Elena replied calmly.
Adrian lowered his head.
"For years, I've regretted what I did."
Elena remained silent.
Then Adrian revealed the truth.
"The adviser who accused your father confessed before his execution. He forged everything. I realized my mistake too late."
His voice broke.
"I searched for your body for months."
Elena's eyes softened, but only slightly.
"You chose to believe lies instead of trusting me."
Adrian nodded painfully.
"I know."
Before either could say more, assassins hidden among Adrian's officers attacked.
Chaos erupted.
Adrian threw himself in front of Elena, taking an arrow meant for her.
As soldiers captured the assassins, the truth emerged.
The same noble family that had framed Elena years earlier had orchestrated the attack.
Months later, peace was signed between the two kingdoms.
Adrian survived.
But Elena chose not to return.
"I forgave you," she told him one final time. "But forgiveness isn't the same as going back."
Adrian smiled sadly.
"I understand, Your Majesty."
Empress Elena ruled wisely for decades, becoming one of history's most beloved rulers.
