Chapter 8 - Adrian Vale Was Already Dead

Adrian almost smiled.
Not because anything was funny.
Because sometimes the human mind rejected danger by treating it like nonsense.
“I’m standing right here.”
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
Emily took the memory card.
“What exactly is on this?”
“Probate records. Corporate filings. A death declaration.”
Mara swore under her breath.
Adrian looked at her.
“You knew?”
“No.”
Claire said, “Someone filed sealed documents claiming Adrian died during an overseas security operation three months ago. The public record hasn’t been updated yet.”
“Why?” Emily asked.
“Because the filing was designed to trigger private corporate clauses first.”
Adrian understood.
“My shares.”
“Yes.”
Vale Protective Services had been built with one unusual provision. If Adrian died, voting control transferred temporarily to Emily until a board review.
“She needed to sign acceptance,” Claire said. “That’s what Mason was forcing her to do.”
Emily looked sick.
“And if I signed?”
“You would have become controlling trustee for about forty-five minutes.”
“Then what?”
“You would have signed a second document transferring the voting block to a holding company.”
“Owned by Victor?”
Claire shook her head.
“Owned by North Star.”
Mara crouched beside Sheriff Pike’s body.
“He was shot twice. Close range.”
Claire looked away.
“I heard him arguing with someone.”
“Who?”
“I couldn’t see.”
Emily inserted the card into her tablet using an adapter.
Folders appeared.
Adrian watched her open the death filing.
There was his full name.
His date of birth.
His Social Security number.
A fake death date.
And a signature from a federal judge.
Emily whispered, “This looks real.”
“It is real enough,” Mara said. “That’s worse.”
Adrian scrolled.
Then stopped.
A witness name sat beneath the declaration.
Victor Vale.
His brother had certified his death.
A second witness had signed.
Mara Quinn.
Adrian looked up.
Mara went pale.
“I never signed that.”
“It’s your signature.”
“It’s forged.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“That’s what everyone says when the paperwork catches up.”
Mara turned on her.
“You’re the one with blood on your clothes standing next to a dead sheriff.”
“And you’re the one whose name is on a fake death certificate.”
Emily stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Adrian kept scrolling.
At the bottom was an attachment.
Security verification.
Biometric approval.
His eyes narrowed.
The approval had not been signed with a password.
It had been signed using a fingerprint scan.
His fingerprint.
And the scan was timestamped three months earlier.
At Vale Protective Services headquarters.
Inside Adrian’s private office.
Adrian looked slowly at Mara.
Only three people had access to that room.
Adrian.
Mara.

And Emily.
