Chapter 19 - The Dead-Man Switch

Adrian understood all at once.
The fake death filing.
Emily’s forced succession.
The archive.
The murder plan.
They were not separate schemes.
They were pieces of one machine.
Thomas shouted over the alarm, “I had no choice.”
Adrian stared at him.
“You always have a choice.”
“If North Star fell into the wrong hands, the files had to become public.”
“You mean if you lost control.”
Thomas’s face twisted.
“I mean if the system failed.”
Rebecca laughed.
“You are the system.”
Rook shoved Mara against a cabinet and grabbed the terminal.
“I can stop the release.”
Thomas raised a gun.
“No.”
Adrian stepped between them.
“Put it down.”
Thomas looked at his son.
“If those files stay buried, hundreds of criminals walk free.”
“If they go public, innocent families get destroyed too.”
“They chose who they stood beside.”
Emily appeared at the vault entrance with Noah behind her.
“No.”
Thomas looked at her.
She held the real memory card.
“You don’t get to decide everyone’s guilt in secret.”
Thomas’s hand trembled.
Adrian saw it then.
Not strength.
Fear.
His father had spent eleven years building a machine because he could not trust courts, police, family, or time.
Eventually he had stopped trusting anyone except himself.
Rook pointed at the server rack.
“The card contains the master audit trail. With it, we can separate criminal evidence from private leverage.”
Rebecca nodded.
“He’s right.”
Victor staggered to his feet.
“That may be the first time anyone has said that tonight.”
The countdown hit 01:58.
Mara took the card from Emily.
“Tell me what to do.”
Rook moved to the terminal.
Thomas raised his gun again.
This time he aimed at Rook’s back.
Adrian saw it.
“Dad.”
Thomas fired.
Adrian lunged.
The bullet hit the terminal instead.
Sparks exploded.
Rook shouted.
The countdown froze.
00:47.
Then resumed.
00:46.
Rebecca cursed.
“You damaged the interface.”
Thomas whispered, “Then destroy everything.”
Adrian grabbed him.
“No.”
Thomas fought him.
For an old man, he was still strong.
Victor helped Adrian pin him to the floor.
Mara and Rook ripped open the terminal casing.
Rebecca moved to a secondary console.
Emily held Noah tightly.
The countdown reached ten.
Nine.
Eight.
Rook shouted, “I need successor authorization!”
Emily ran to the terminal.
“Where?”
“Thumb pad!”
She slammed her thumb down.
Six.
Five.
The system flashed.
SUCCESSOR VERIFIED.
Four.
Three.
A prompt appeared.
PUBLISH / QUARANTINE / DESTROY.
Emily stared at the options.
Thomas shouted, “Publish!”
Rook yelled, “Quarantine!”
Rebecca shouted, “Destroy it!”
Two.
One.
May you like
Emily made her choice.
