Chapter 4 — The Family I Chose

Six months later...

My mother accepted a plea agreement.

Felony assault.

Child endangerment.

Harassment.

A restraining order.

Mandatory counseling.

She cried when the judge sentenced her.

I didn't.

Outside the courthouse, reporters asked if I had forgiven her.

I looked toward Claire.

She was holding Ethan, who was laughing as he tried to grab my tie.

Then I answered.

"I hope she changes."

"But my first job isn't being a good son."

I wrapped my arm around my wife.

"It's being a good husband."

Then I kissed Ethan's forehead.

"And a good father."

My father approached us slowly.

"I should've stopped her."

"Yes," I said.

"You should have."

He nodded with tears in his eyes.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"You won't get it today."

He accepted that.

Some wounds need years.

Some never fully heal.

That night, I stood in Ethan's nursery.

A new crib.

Fresh paint.

A different house.

No memories of violence.

Claire slipped her hand into mine.

"Do you ever regret calling the police?"

I looked at my sleeping son.

Then at the woman who had almost lost her life protecting him.

"Not for one second."

Because family isn't the people who share your blood.

May you like

It's the people you would stand between and danger...

Even when the danger has your mother's face.
