He Opened the Nursery Door... and Found His Mother Attacking His Wife

Chapter 1 — The Scream From the Nursery

The nursery door flew open so hard it slammed against the wall.

"STOP!"

The scream didn't sound like mine.

It sounded like an animal protecting its young.

For one frozen second, I couldn't move.

My mother had both hands tangled in my wife's hair, slamming her head against our son's oak crib.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

The cradle rattled violently.

Inside, six-month-old Ethan was screaming so hard his tiny face had turned bright red. His little hands reached through the rails, shaking as if he was begging someone—anyone—to save him.

"Please..." my wife, Claire, sobbed. "Please stop..."

Blood streaked across the side of the crib.

My vision blurred.

"Mom..."

She didn't even look at me.

"You married this ungrateful little snake!" she shouted, yanking another fistful of Claire's hair. "She turned you against your own family!"

That was it.

I crossed the room in two strides.

I grabbed my mother by both shoulders and threw her backward.

She crashed into the massive mahogany wardrobe with a sickening thud.

The room fell silent.

Claire collapsed onto the carpet, gasping for air.

I scooped Ethan out of the crib with one arm and knelt beside my wife with the other.

"Claire... look at me."

She couldn't.

One eye was already swelling shut.

A thin line of blood ran down her forehead.

Behind me, my mother staggered to her feet.

"You pushed me?"

Her voice trembled with disbelief.

"You pushed your own mother... for her?"

I slowly stood.

Still holding my son.

Still shielding my wife behind me.

"Stay away from them."

My voice barely sounded human.

"Daniel..." my father whispered from the hallway. "Calm down."

I turned toward him.

"You watched this happen."

He lowered his eyes.

"I didn't think she'd..."

"You didn't stop her."

My mother pointed at Claire.

"She deserved it!"

"She stole you from us!"

Claire cried weakly from the floor.

"I never..."

"Shut up!" my mother screamed.

She took another step toward us.

Instinct took over.

"One more step," I said quietly, "and I'll call the police."

She laughed.

"You wouldn't dare."

Without breaking eye contact...

I reached into my pocket.

Dialed 911.

And pressed the speaker button.

The operator answered immediately.

"My name is Daniel Brooks," I said.

"My mother just assaulted my wife and endangered my infant son."

The smile disappeared from my mother's face.

For the first time...

She looked afraid.

Then someone knocked on the still-open front door.

"Lakeside Police Department!"

May you like

My father's face turned white.

Because no one in the house had called them.
