Chapter 18 - The False Victory

The next morning, Vale Industries headquarters became a fortress.

Police remained outside.

Federal investigators occupied a conference suite one floor below the boardroom.

Claire arrived without Noah.

He was safe with Rebecca’s sister under protective supervision.

Adrian entered separately.

He had not slept.

At exactly nine, Claire placed the original server case on the conference table.

It was empty.

Malcolm did not know that.

The board meeting began.

Twenty minutes passed.

Nothing.

Forty.

Still nothing.

Then Monica received word.

Malcolm Vale had been arrested at a private marina near Oceanside.

The room exhaled.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Claire felt relief move through her body.

It was over.

Or seemed to be.

Federal agents took Malcolm into custody without incident.

His attorney immediately began negotiating.

News networks announced the arrest.

Vale Industries stock rose.

The board prepared to vote on permanent leadership changes.

Then Adrian’s attorney stood.

“We have one additional matter.”

Claire looked up.

A court order appeared on the screen.

The Whitmore voting shares had been temporarily frozen.

Malcolm had filed an emergency action through a family trustee hours before his arrest.

Until the ownership dispute was resolved, Claire’s twenty-nine percent could not vote.

Adrian’s allies suddenly had the advantage again.

Claire stared at the order.

Even in handcuffs, Malcolm had created one final trap.

The board chair postponed the CEO removal decision.

Adrian remained suspended but not removed.

For the first time in days, his old supporters smiled.

One director leaned toward him.

“You may survive this.”

Adrian looked across the table at Claire.

Then at the voting numbers.

All he had to do was stay silent.

His father would fight the criminal case.

The trust litigation could last years.

Claire might lose control.

Adrian could eventually return.

Everything he had spent his life protecting remained within reach.

The chair asked whether there were any final statements.

Adrian slowly stood.

“Yes.”

His attorney whispered.

“Don’t.”

Adrian ignored him.

“My father manipulated company records.”

The room went silent.

“He concealed Whitmore obligations.”

His lawyer grabbed his sleeve.

“Adrian.”

Adrian pulled away.

“He monitored my wife.”

Claire stared at him.

“He helped my mother take my son.”

The directors stopped moving.

“And I benefited from a system I knew was dishonest long before I admitted it.”

Adrian looked toward the shareholders.

“I resign.”

His attorney closed his eyes.

Adrian continued.

“Effective immediately.”

Claire had expected a fight.

She had prepared for another betrayal.

Instead, Adrian destroyed his own last path back to power.

But before anyone could respond, Ethan rushed into the room.

“Claire.”

She turned.

“What?”

May you like

He held up his phone.

“Malcolm escaped custody during transport.”
