Chapter 11 - The Boardroom War

Monday morning arrived with twelve black vehicles lining the entrance of Vale Industries.

Reporters filled the sidewalk.

Employees watched from windows.

Adrian entered through the front doors at 8:41.

He wore a dark navy suit.

His expression was controlled.

He looked exactly like the man financial magazines had spent years calling unstoppable.

Claire arrived eleven minutes later.

No entourage.

No dramatic entrance.

Only Rebecca and Ethan.

Every camera turned toward her.

Adrian watched through the boardroom glass.

It was the first time he had seen his wife since she left.

Something inside him shifted.

Claire looked different.

Not richer.

Not colder.

Free.

She entered the boardroom and took the empty seat across from him.

Adrian leaned back.

“Enjoying yourself?”

Claire opened her folder.

“No.”

“Could’ve fooled me.”

“I wanted a divorce.”

She met his eyes.

“You made everything else necessary.”

The board chair called the meeting to order.

Claire’s twenty-nine percent stake gave her enormous power.

But not enough.

Adrian still had family shares and loyal directors.

The vote appeared almost evenly divided.

Then Claire introduced the Whitmore licensing agreement.

Board members began whispering.

Vale Industries potentially owed Whitmore Trust hundreds of millions in unpaid royalties.

Adrian’s attorney attacked the contract.

“Ancient.”

“Superseded.”

“Unenforceable.”

Claire said nothing.

Ethan placed another document on the screen.

A renewal agreement.

Signed seven years earlier.

The signature belonged to Adrian.

He stared at it.

“I don’t remember signing that.”

Ethan nodded.

“You signed it with a refinancing package.”

Claire remembered the evening.

Adrian had been drinking wine at dinner.

She had asked what the documents were.

He had laughed.

Paperwork.

Marriage means what’s yours is mine anyway.

Now that sentence had come back to him.

The board called a recess.

Adrian cornered Claire in the hallway.

“You tricked me.”

She looked almost surprised.

“I asked you to read it.”

“You knew.”

“My trust attorneys knew.”

“You married me to do this.”

Claire’s face changed.

“No.”

Her voice became quieter.

“I married you because I loved you.”

For the first time, Adrian had no response.

Claire stepped closer.

“That’s the part you should be ashamed of.”

The board reconvened.

Before the removal vote could begin, Malcolm Vale entered.

The room fell silent.

He carried a leather folder.

“I have evidence,” Malcolm announced, “that Claire Whitmore Vale’s shares were acquired through fraudulent funds.”

Claire looked at him.

May you like

Malcolm smiled.

“And when the board sees where her forty-six million dollars really came from, this little takeover ends today.”
